$6,000. Cleveland 40-70 wheels and 30-32 brakes for 8.50-6 tires. Great condition and complete. Likely came off an Ag Cat, based on other parts in the hangar. Will split the set. Make offer.

I am a Piper and Cessna taildragger owner and am unsure why this wheel is so particular to the 8GCBC. I imagine there are many STCs available to put something more cost-effective on the aircraft, especially when a new wheel from Univair is $4700.

Wow! Check out Grove - he is an innovative engineer and has STC'd wheels and brakes. I think Robbie is now OEM for ACA, whatever those initials mean.

Original equipment manufacturer. A set of Alaska wheels, brakes and axles is about
$2,500 as I recall. They don’t work that well with the 8.50 tire as that tire likes the wide Scout/ag cat wheel. But you can’t run bigger tires on the original Scout wheels. They slip. So you can run smaller 8.0 and larger 26, 29 and 31 with the Alaska airframes/grove wheels and brakes.

Appreciate the info.

I need everything from the tip of the gear leg out, on the Scout. Formerly on floats.

Are ABI that Alaska Airframe sell, one and the same as Grove sell?

If buying new, dropping down to the 8.0 x 6 Tire is a reasonable compromise if there is a set of Bush Wheels potentially planned in the future.

Grove is your answer through at least 26". I could go check again, but you can use the link above.

Unless you can find the Cleveland wheels, brakes and axles really reasonable the best option for certified is Alaska axles, wheels and brakes. If you ever plan on bushwheels then stay away from the Cleveland’s. The 8.0 tire is not stc’d for the Scout according to ACA.

Appreciate the advice. I'm not sure if I intend on Alaskan Bushwheels but it would be nice to have that option. Ok, if I need to run 8:50 x 6 is there anyway to mitigate the potential spin issue on the ABI Wheels?

Some suggest if you want to go big, Goodyear 26" are a nice compromise for landing in the rough and stand up well for coming home to land on the tarmac.

Thought's?

I read that in Australia the guys put another tire bead (off an old tire) on the wheel and mount the bush wheel and it keeps it from spinning. I don’t know if you would have a problem with the 26, but I really don’t know. I can’t figure out why the 8.50 works ok on the narrower wheel when the tire was designed for the 40-47 agcat and scout wheel. I read somewhere that some body put rubber cement on the inside of the wheel and that kept the bush wheels from spinning. I hope you try it and tell me the result. I need the tires for Idaho but don’t want to have to buy new wheels, axles and brakes. And I would take them off when I get back home. So you have to change out the axle again or buy a second set of Alaska wheels and then, do the 8.50 really fit correctly?

Ok misunderstanding, have I got this right?

If I purchase the ABI 1 1/2" Axles, Wheels and Brakes. Am I good for both the 6" Bushwheels and 8:50 x 6 Tires without issues?

Question - thought's on Aluminum or Steel - 1 1/2" Axles? Which is preferred?

Thank you!

Aluminum or steel what? Wheels will be aluminum or magnesium. Alaska wheels are only aluminum. If you are talking about the gear legs-definitely go with the aluminum if you have the cash. Saves almost 30 lbs.
yes they run both 8.50 and bushwheels on the ABI wheel set.

i dropped off gear legs at the UPS store today for shipment to the re-bender. 44 lbs on their scale for two standard length, steel gear legs. thought y'all might like to know.

Gotcha!

I was referring to the 1 1/2" Wheel
Axles. I believe they come in both Aluminum or Steel. Is there a preference?

Agreed, aluminum gear legs would be nice. Not in the program at this time.

Expert here - what is it that you want to know about the 95-1? I hold three field approvals for them.

Haven't weighed the gear legs on the Scout but they do feel a lot heavier than 22# a piece. Thx for the comparison.

Not an axle expert. Had no idea there were aluminum axles - those look like they are for experimental aircraft.

Grove supplies a lot of stuff to ACA, and as I understand it, to get a standard part for a certificated aircraft you have to buy it through ACA.

But if ACA does not use a Grove part, then your route is PMA, STC, or field approval.

Don't take my word for it - talk to ACA or Grove.

My next question is why, if you are looking at very rough off-airport work, would you consider an aluminum axle?
