Hi all,

I picked up a 1980 Scout back in July as a second airplane. I put 45 hours on it this summer between floats and wheels. I’m looking forward to the knowledge to be gained in this owners group.

Good Choice! - LOL...

I'm envious that you put 45 hrs on this past Summer. What's your 1st aircraft of choice?

Cheers!

This is my other airplane. It’s a 1958 Cessna 175. As you can see in the pictures, it’s been highly modified. Both airplanes are fantastic for very different reasons. So, I can’t say I’d generally select one over the other....

Did your Scout have those tires when you got it? Do you know what wheel you are using. the original wheels are 40-47.

No. It came with some really old 26 in Bushwheels. The wheels are 6 bolt Cleveland’s that were field approved on years ago. The tailwheel is Gar-Aero.... Also field approved many years ago.

Spectacular 175 - I bet it is as good as a 180. I like the paint scheme on the Scout better.

Hi Bob!

Thank you! I personally think it’s better than a 180. It is light on the controls like a 172 and I burn 9-10 gph in cruise and my payload is very similar to early 180’s considering required fuel. It’s a great airplane.

I really like the Scout too. I’ve been consistently impressed by its capabilities and have learned that its primary performance limitation so far is the pilot. 😂

The scout is great! And it can take you into a lot of places. I miss my Scout, I'd take one over a Cub.

I’m aquatinted with a man named Rick here in Fairbanks that operated a Scout on a 135 ticket for years. He told me that a capable pilot could land and take off from anywhere a responsible Cub driver would go.

My opinion on the Scout edging out a Cub are based on speed and comfort. A Scout will obviously get to the destination more quickly with fuel to spare and is FAR more comfortable of a ride. A cub makes a pilot look skilled regardless of their skill level. The Scout, even with my level of experience in the plane, will do most anything my Cub buddies are doing. And, there are guys in Idaho that fly them that do more with them than their cub driver counterparts. I hope one that that I’m that skilled in this particular machine. All it takes is time and money, I suspect.

I owned a Scout and flew it well. I've also flown cubs, for work, and a little play. The Cub is certainly easier, the Scout requires much more seat time to be as good. Might need a little more space then a good Cub driver, but the Scout will do it faster, warmer, and more comfortable than a cub. The Scout will haul more weight than a cub. The Scout is heavier boned, but also more survivable if the in a bad wreck.

And lets be honest, where 90% of cub drivers go play, a good Scout pilot will be right there.

I literally just got in from ferrying a very nice cub 20 mins, and it reminds me of why I prefer a Scout.

Now, I'm not :poop: on cubs, many prefer the Cub, and that's cool, Just like some prefer Prime rib...... I'll take the Ribeye every time

Appreciate your thought's. I don"t have a datum to work from. I haven't flown either, yet.

That's why I'm so curious.

Thx for your insights...
