Camera mount to tail, interesting observation

Hi all,

I picked up a Flight Flix mount that works great on the tailwheel assembly on my Super D. So I put a GoPro there and filmed a flight. The camera is mounted rigidly and it doesn't move at all. So what was interesting is that it seems to show the fuselage flexing in flight. If everything was rigid the airframe would stay in the same fixed position within the image boundaries, but as you can see it wavers about. It certainly does it more with the wheels on the grass, but even in flight it's noticeable. Surprised the hell out of me. Not sure what this is.

pretty sure you've got some type of image stabilization going on there. I use a solid mount on my tail handles and the only thing that is dramatic is the fabric flopping around on climb out at full power.

Good suggestion. I've never seen this effect with the mount on my strut. However, I'm using a new camera on the tail which (if I recall correctly) has the video stabilization mode enabled. I'll play with that and see how that changes things.

good call, video stabilization and vibrations don't do well together. Saw this when I had a Sony handicam on a drone camera mount back before mount stabilization was what it is today.

I will say I came back from a cross country the other day and waited with my engine running after landing while a couple of guys in a Robinson R22 filled it up and took their time. I was sitting quite a ways back staring straight down the tail boom as they started it and ran got it ready to "taxi". Damn if that boom doesn't move almost a foot in violent shaking motions sometimes.

Yep. The Robbies are "infamous" for their "tail boom shake"... So much so that GoPro used a video taken with the GoProHero4 mounted to an R-22's tailboom with an NFlightCam mount to demonstrate the effectiveness of their built-in image stabilization. Pretty incredible difference with/without the image stabilization!

Just a vote for the problem being technical with the camera and not structural with the airplane. I've been through the "what the heck is my wing doing?!" and then, "oh. it's the camera." YMMV
