Got my crank turned, the cam polished and new cylinders. Flew 30 min over the airport. Cylinder head temp went to 450 then cooled to 400. I don't remember what my cylinder head temp was before I removed the engine back in April. What should I except it to be on a cool day in October

Miller in Planview used to make the market in the Viking. Is he still alive?? Many years ago when I worked as a demo pilot at Beechcraft we would take the Vikings up there. That we would take in trade.

You might have flown her then...39878.
Millers was sold to Rocket. I dont know what happened to Rocket...
I loved the Viking. Fast comfortable and quite aerobatic...
Not that any upset training was ever undertaken. But I heard stories 🤣

I remember that N number. I have quite a few hours in it. I used it for several trips as a chase plane while delivering or picking up other planes. James Miller and Marge Mitchell died. Marlin Miller had cancer and sold the place to Tim Hardage and it became Rocket Aviation. Rocket is still there.

Wish I knew why my cylinder head temp is 400. Have an hour and a half on it after the work. Can't find anything wrong with baffling or air flow.

400 isn't too high on a tight motor.
Run the snot out of it for 10 or so hours to get everything bedded in. Re check mag timing. Make sure the bottom plugs aren't getting oiled.
What kind of CHT setup do you have?

Trouble shoot high CHT in this order> mag timing off? Baffling allowing huge air gaps. Baffling issues are not as easy to diagnose as you may think, you have to look hard everywhere and the baffling may look good when the cowlings off but it needs to be looked at closely when on. 400 deg is too high if it goes on for too long. It should be coming down in a hour or less, if not you have another issue. Mixture control full rich? May be Mag timing, easy to get off the mark.
