I'm considering purchasing an ACA Super Decathlon located near Boston. I live in CT and this is my first time buying a plane. Can anyone recommend a mechanic or shop in the vicinity to do the pre-buy?
That's the rub when one shows up at a good price. You need to jump on it and either skip the pre-buy or put down a deposit you may or may not get back if you back out due to the results of the pre-buy.
That's what I did when I bought mine last month. Went and looked at it, negotiated a deal on the spot, put down a $1K deposit the next day, then arranged a pre-buy. Did some tweaks to the deal based on the pre-buy. There are plenty of buyers right now, so you have to be ready to act fast.
I bought the airplane in question. The sellers were great. We agreed to place a fully refundable deposit with an escrow company. They immediately sent me copies of the log books. I made one trip and did the prebuy and flew the aircraft home that afternoon. The only discrepancy I found that one mag was over the 500 hour inspection. They removed the mag and did the inspection. They also included some spare parts like a complete mounted tail wheel and an extra tube and tire, plus two parachutes. I flew the airplane home in 10 hours with no issues. Very happy, great price.
