Citabria Difference in aileron bay trailing edge

As we inspect our disassembled wings for the 7GCBC, I am wanting to buy new trailing edges for the flap and aileron bays. The Wag is at least 8 weeks out for the aileron bay. I called ACA and they are not sure that the new trailing edge will work.

Has any of you know if the new trailing edge will work with the old wood (soon to be milman) wings?

The aluminum trailing edge material is the same for the wood wings as it is for the Milman conversion. All that the conversion does is it swaps out the full thickness wood spars and replace them with an aluminum I-beam extrusion that is much thinner. To make up the difference in spar thicknesses so that you can use all of the original parts, Milman provides a combination of plywood and aluminum spacers with everything numbered very clearly making it all kind of easy to pull off. The hardest part was making sure the drilling jig was placed and clamped precisely where it was supposed to be for each rib but even that part wasn't that difficult.

Good luck, post pics!

Thanks Bartman,

What I am asking is if the trailing edges of a wood wing, is the same as the factory metal wing. I'm currently in the process of installing milman spars. Our trailing edges are hammered from previous work and damage. I want to replace them.

As far as the milman kit... It is a fantastic kit. I've been working on airplanes for 12 years. Rebuilt cubs and Taylorcrafts. Done more STCs to things to remember. This milman kit is by far the best kit I have ever worked with.

Here's where we are so far

Waiting on some hardware from spruce to finish the main bits on this first wing. Then break down the other wing.

This is my wife's plane. She's done most of the work. She's been sand blasting, riveting, painting. All I have done has been straighten ribs and help slide the ribs on the new spars. She's done just about everything else. I think she hates me a bit for it, but I think it'll give her more ownership and pride in the plane when its all done.

I'll start a thread later on the build

yes, the trailing edge pieces are the same for wood and/or the milman converted wings. If yours could be reused they would screw or rivet right back on. I thought you were still in the planning stage, sorry if I was talking down to you!

No worries Bartman, I might not be clear enough, internet hard, and I'm sorry if the next part comes out as talking down!

I realize that the wood wing and the milman wing are the same parts, as the milman kit uses all the wood wing parts minus the spars. We will label this wing, regardless of spar material as a Citabria wing.

My question is, are the trailing edge pieces of a Citabria the same as an ACA wing?

I think I might just risk it and order them

gotcha. the ones I ordered from ACA when I did my wings were close but needed a little manipulation to fit where my ribs were. probably had to do with my wings having the 13 gal tanks but they were close.

Sounds like we have a similar project. Although it's my project and my wife's plane. Also a 7GCBC with the Milman spar.

One thing that the new trailing edges likely won't have is holes drilled for the lower gap fairings. The new factory wings no longer use a fairing there.

Thanks Morgan,
I went ahead and ordered it all. I am not going to install those gap seals. Dale told me that ACA tested the effectivity of the seals and they did nothing. Even if they did, I'd probably not bother with them. I doubt any gain would counter the 31 inch bushwheels or floats the old girl gets forced to haul around the sky.

I probably won't install them either. There was a thread on the facebook Citabria group and one of the commenters had done some testing and found that they didn't do anything. I'll still probably prep and paint them in case we change our mind, but it doesn't seem like a needed item.

No big tires on ours. Not yet at least. Although a friend has a 900ft field/strip on a ridgetop that I'd like some bigger tires for. But realistically there aren't that many places around Central California where they are needed.

My friends just put them on for looks. My partner spent four grand to put 26" tires on our J3, which is used exclusively on pavement. I get to wear out his 8:00x4s on my personal Cub.

I have landed the 6:00x6 Decathlon on a mountain strip, joining my Supercub buddies, who insist that 26" is the minimum for that strip. It is a lot like hanging fuzzy dice from your rear view mirror, except for the cost and performance hit.

Oh, and we no longer have enough aft trim for a hands-off 50 mph approach - but we look cool!

I did order the trailing edges from ACA. They are the same except for the rib layout so I'll have to drill different holes for them
