EC type hinged top cowl

So, to those who have replaced/modified their stock 7ac one piece top cowling with the hinged 7ec type, how was it logged?
STC? Number?
Field approval? 337 copy available?
Blissful Ignorance? (Didn't it come from the factory like that? ).

I'm aware of the definition of 1.1 as written...
I'm also aware that A&P's opinions on the subject differ...
As do A&P/IA's.
Heck, my local PMI even got into a pissing contest about these definitions at an FAA get together last spring...
Bottom line is STC's have been granted in the past for smaller and less vital modifications so asking if anyone knows of one for a modded cowling isn't too far afield.
Ditto a 337.
I guess I'll get the drawing of the 7ec cowling, mod mine to match IAW Standard Practices per 43.13 using what (in my personal opinion) are the ubiquitous "Elementary Operations". Then a logbook entry noting the particulars and WALLA! I can now check my oil without ducking and peeking...
