"Remote Identification" is a the FAA's latest NPRM, driven mostly by the desire to integrate commercial unmanned aircraft into the national airspace system. The problem is, it's going to severely curtail radio control aviation activities by hobbyists, historically a very safe and rules driven usergroup. The wildcard in all of this has been small "drone" operators that operate outside of formal club structures, beyond line-of-sight using long range video and control systems, and with no regard for manned aircraft traffic and mid-air accident risks.

There's a protest planned at the FAA headquarters in DC on Feb 29th. More info can be found at the organizer's website.

We have both authorized drone testing activity under 300 feet within 1 mile of our towered airport and I have been in the pattern with unauthorized drones reported at 400’ in the pattern on 3 occasions in the past 10 months. It is only a matter of time!
