Just joined the group and have been reading the forums. I bought my Christmas present early this year, a 1979 Citabria 7gcbc. Just in case Santa has me on his naughty list. It's been sitting dormant in our community hanger for two years and needs some TLC. I hope to have it annualed and out flying in the very near future.

There is a good fabric and paint shop up north of Greenville if you run into something you can't handle.

A good lightplane mechanic is all you need. Find an IA who will let you do some of the work, and educate him/her on what to look for during spar inspection. This is not rocket science. Fabric repair is easy to learn, if not trivial, and the Lycoming engines are about 3/4 of all lightplane engines, so any A&P should be able to care for the engine.

I have a good mechanic with 31+ years experience and she's an IA but she doesn't have experience inspecting wood spars and believes she could miss something that an experienced wood working mechanic would catch. I'm sure there are many mechanics who would say they can do the pre-purchase inspection but then if they miss something small and next year it doesn't pass then it's ok because they don't own the plane, but she's not like that.

All she has to do is read up on compression cracks. If she is not willing to do the spar inspection, surely there are other IAs in the area.
The A/D is darn near impossible to do as described. All four sides of every square inch? With a stupid Bend A Lite and mirror? Gimme a break. You can come closer with a really good TV system.

Have your A&P call Rainbow Ron and talk to him about the spar inspection. He will give you or your A&P some comfort.
