If you've been involved in forums at all in the last ten years then you probably know how hard it has been to compete against Facebook. Facebook has a few advantages that are like a steady stream of sugar highs for our brains.....that constant flow of micro-uppers, quick responses, immediate gratification.

If you're trying to build depth in a community of people that have a common interest though, Facebook leaves a lot to be desired. So let's take a look at the differences and then you can make up your own mind.

Facebook posts don't show up in search results.
You might not have noticed that you never see Facebook discussions on a particular topic when you do an internet search. It sounds crazy but in all of those conversations, all of that information being shared, search engines don't register any of it. If you're in a particular group you can try searching the group but going to Facebook to do a search takes away from the convenience factor that people typically give to Facebook over Forums. Being excluded from search results also doesn't help the group to attract new members. All of the pictures of beautiful new airplanes that Dale posts to FB don't do ACA any good in the larger internet since Google ignores them.
Forums posts are indexed by search engines and are actually weighted very favorably. In some cases, active forums will have multiple search hits attributed to them in a single page of search results, usually on the first page. This makes the community stronger by making the information being shared accessible and by giving the community a higher profile which is more likely to keep bringing in new members.

Forums threads run deeper
Conversations at a forums site go until they stop. It might be a day or two, it might be years before a thread runs out of juice. Facebook posts generally run until they're buried by the flow of more stuff. A steady flow of short chats isn't necessarily a bad thing but it doesn't grow strong ties between community members,

Information and interactions are organized and stay organized
We have structure here that make it possible to consistently focus on topics or interactions that you enjoy most.

Noise, chatter, drama
Hanging out at Facebook can be overwhelming.......I don't even think I need to explain that one. It's my job to keep the mood here mellow and fun. No drama, no crazy political chatter, no unwelcome smut smattered about. We're here to talk about a particular family of airplanes that we hold in high esteem. We're here to talk about being out in the sky with people we regard as friends. Enthusiasts are welcome to join in, new owners are encouraged to get up to speed at their own pace, RC pilots are regarded as one of us. Please don't expect ChampCitabriaDecathlonForums.com to host the kind of drama that Facebook seems to attract. Not here, not ever, please.

Unlimited expansion
We are the community here, we aren't just along for the ride. If you have a great idea, I'd like to hear about it. If you think something is horrible, please let me know! We can build or change or remove anything that will make the site better and it will always be that way.

The back button is the back button
Ever notice you're looking at something at Facebook and then you click a link to read something else and when you hit the back button it takes you somewhere completely new because the site is always moving everyone along like a giant conveyor belt??? Where was that last post you were just looking at? A forums site is a stable platform for the sharing of information at a pace set by you.

Photos display better here than they do on Facebook
Ever notice that Facebook doesn't let you zoom in on photos? I don't know why. Take a look at the photos posted to some of the threads here and you'll see when you click on one photo you can scroll through all of the photos on that page and can even zoom way in on them making it possible to see details that you can't pick out on Facebook. I've set up the site so that you can upload up to 100 photos per post. I hope some of you will take advantage of that to post photo collections from air shows, fly ins, days out with friends, projects, classifieds listings, etc.

I'm not stalking you or selling your data
Facebook is free because Mark Zuckerberg is compiling data on your behavior and then selling it. ChampCitabriaDecathlonForums.com is free because I already have a job and I'm just happy to have you here! I wouldn't know how to compile your data and I wouldn't know who to sell it to so you're safe here.

That's it for now. Feel free to add whatever other reasons I might have missed. I don't hate Facebook, I only kind of hate it. :)

Thanks for reading!

Facebook news is piling up lately.

Sheryl Sandberg says Facebook users would have to pay to end data-targeted ads

If Facebook users wanted to stop their data from being used by advertisers, they would have to pay for it. “We don’t have an opt-out at the highest level,” the company’s chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, said during an appearance on NBC’s Today. “That would be a paid product.” She claimed that while the online sharing platform “depends on your data,” it’s not selling the information to advertisers.........

Personally I'll be happy to move away from facebook completely. Forums are a way better format for capturing knowledge base and looking up information. I'll make a point of posting all my Citabria related discussion here for sure.

I feel the same way but, unfortunately, some things that I have to have access to are on Facebook but I've definitely cut back and deleted a lot of stuff/connections

Yeah I didn't mean to sound like a facebook hater but it is best used for "look what I did today" than researching what people have done for landing gear bolts and such.

My brother signed me up for facebook. Then I had to endure way too many e-mails about who posted what, and 99.999% of such postings were inane to the point of obnoxiousness. So I never really joined in. I hope I didn't offend all those folks who wanted to be friends.

As I've said elsewhere, the forum is, in my opinion, a much better solution than Facebook. But, you have to get Dale and Jerry and the guys from ACA over here, because that's the most valuable thing regardless of the technical merits of one or the other.

I agree with you Don. I don't know Jerry although I did reach out to him when we first started the site but he didn't call back. Dale is very active on Facebook in addition to his ACA activities so I'm not sure he'd want another venue to have to monitor for his day gig. I've been taking a wait and see approach to this, wait for the site's activity's to pick up and then try again to see if Jerry has any interest in dedicating some degree official effort to the site.

My day job has me super busy and I'm also trying to get my plane's wings done so it can be in for annual by about the second or third week of October. Once that happens I'll renew my efforts to grow the site. I'll be looking for a few advertisers to post tasteful banner ads so if anyone has a connection with a business that serves our community of owners/pilots/enthusiasts please point them in my direction. Prices will be very cheap, just want to put together enough of a budget to support the hosting costs, a few giveaways each year, and to maybe cover travel expenses to a big fly-in or two.

Some sites ask for donations but I prefer to let the businesses that profit from our activities support the site. It doesn't cost much, just need five or six to say yes and we're good.

It's a catch-22 because you need them to draw more people, but they don't want to bother unless there are more people.

Two thoughts:

1) Maybe you could offer them a free sponsorship for a year, or something? At this point, a sponsorship would benefit you more than them, so something to consider.

2) If you could get his permission, maybe there is a way to repost Dale's facebook content here, without creating more work for him?

I would think the searchability and retention of this forum would actually be a big benefit to Dale, so he doesn't have to answer the same questions over and over again.

Free ad spots is definitely something I'll consider.

Dale has already extended permission to me to repost his photos and stuff here. It's nice when I have the time to do it but lately it's been tough. If when my wings are past the installing-the-new-spars part of the project I'll have a lot more free time!

Ok, I'll be the contrary guy. Facebook has improved my life by enriching my human connections. Through it, I am in contact with all the members of my far flung extended family. Dozens of Cousins. Hey, that rhymes. Am also in touch with friends from high school, college, and military service. Without Zuckerberg, none of that happens. Maybe I get a clunky family update email at Christmas. Cousin Bobby had cancer, but he's all better now. Too late to send cards.

Example: I graduated from West Point. Interesting trivia point: so did the commanders of both sides in 55 of the 60 major battles of the US Civil War. Which means that all those Confederate generals with US military bases named after them are fellow alumni. So we have been having a vigorous debate amongst classmates on the merits of renaming those bases to names more consistent with Army values. Before Facebook none of us bothered to keep in touch, much less engage meaningfully on issues of importance to our institution.

People have been citing the public good to control information since the “Ordinance for correcting and regulating the Abuses of the Press” in 1683, and well before that.

But it's not the best technical tool for everything. This forum is excellent.
