My A&P just finished my annual (73 GCBC , O320 A2B ) mufflers are shot -again . Last pair lasted approx 340 hrs .
Would any of you Gents /Ladies recommend a particular mfgr that you have had good service from ?
Thanks
Gillie

How are they failing? It may be that something else is going on - a good muffler lasts for thousands of hours.

interesting..... I've yet to replace exhaust on a citabria. But I've had good luck on other planes using Knisley and Acorn on other planes, as well as atlee dodge.

I purchased my two muffies from aircraftexhaust.com
Brand new parts with FAA paperwork for $70.00 less per side than I found anywhere else.
The Parts Exchange in South Carolina.

I'm surprised/disappointed there are no STC's for exhaust on these airplanes that eliminate the AD's. Sutton makes a great system for Pipers, I wonder if they would consider expanding their business to other makes? I would love to eliminate my dual mufflers but I don't think its worth the $$ to convert to a single muffler system that is still requires the AD.

My dual muffler setup needed welding at every annual so the AD is justified. I always told my IA I just wanted to toss it all in a box and send it to Dawley (now AWI as pointed out above). As a repair station they would take the mounting flanges and "repair" the rest by replacing it all. At least that way it would pass the pressure test for a few years. He always managed to breathe just enough life back into the existing setup to get another year out of it.

We have always had good luck using acorn and AWI. Acorn would always last twice as long as factory Robinson exhaust and they are always run cherry red hot. The complete rebuild “repair is the way to go, cry once with the higher price or cry every time there’s a repair. Not to mention new gaskets just about time.

Well I just had an interesting email from Brian Sutton (Sutton Exhaust). He makes the BEST system for pipers (Super Cubs and Super Cruisers) that money can buy. The system is basically identical to our single muffler system. He said he's actually sold a system to a Citabria owner who has successfully installed it with a field approval. The installation also eliminates the AD. With that, My IA and I will be focusing on the legal installation of Sutton exhaust. If/when it's done, I'll be more than happy to share all the documentation.

I suppose if you wanted a really clean install, you could use a lower cowl from a single exhaust Citabria. Personally, I think a clean cut hole out the side would be just fine. We'll see. I plan to talk to my IA soon about it and will get the ball rolling. To quote Brian's email:

Hi Eric,
Thanks for your comments! Our system is very similar to the Citabria as they are both Elano designs, but ours doesn't have the internal baffle that breaks loose and plugs the tailpipe.. Attached is a copy of a field approval done on a 7GC if it will help. I also attached a few from PA-20 and PA-22's, and PA-14's along with the STC for support to show it is on several other airplanes. Its probably cost prohibitive to add them to the STC, but as long as guys keep getting field approvals, that all they really matters. Any I/A should be able to work with you to get it approved if you give him these documents. Just let me know if you need any other help or if you have any questions. Thanks for the interest!
Brian
