Anyone? I'd be interested to hear about your operation and what the parameters are for members. Thanks!

Had a SWA guy try to start one with an old citabria several years ago in the BWI area. Ended up selling the A/C because the insurance requirements were too great. Maybe that's changed.. Dual was fine solo was a problem..

I think there was one here in Alaska. I believe they had 2 7GCBCs. I feel like it was something like 5 or 6 members only. No idea who or if its still out there.

I suppose I could have just searched for Citabria Flying Club,

I'm curious to know about how many hours per year the airplanes fly in a typical club. I'm guessing anywhere from ten to forty hours per year, per member.

I run a club out of DMW with a 1968 7ECA. We have 8 owners, and fly about 150 hours a year total. We’ve owned it for 4 years. It has worked out great!

Flying clubs move into a different realm for insurance - our taildraggers typically shell out $500/mo or more for club insurance. I can get a more accurate number; Plusone has four taildraggers at MYF, and a similar number at SEE.

Might be the guy I know
That was probably me. We tried to move into an RV8 a few years ago, and the insurance was going to prohibit it. We ended up keeping the airplane, a couple guys moved on to bigger faster, and were replaced with new owner/members. Its a great airplane, and all around good fit for all involved.

I've wanted to start a local flying club with a Citabria for years now but when we have a plane lined up we don't have people, when we have people, there's no plane. Covid didn't help but I could probably scrounge up six or seven people, maybe I'll try again.

@B737jenkins , I'm going to call today and maybe you can help with some start-up advice.

I hope you're enjoy it! It seems like a yearly spring ritual at this point for me to email the group about a club. If Covid didn't happen we probably would have had it going for at least a couple of years by now. Then prices went nuts, maybe this will be the year.

There's a 7GCAA club at Sterling MA (3B3) with 4-5 members. I considered it when a spot came up, but they don't allow acro in the plane so I passed.

We had a first meeting on Saturday, five of us are ready to move forward with it so we're looking for a plane. We probably won't authorize acro either, it introduces too many unknowns into the program but we are trying to accommodate up to two student pilots at a time so long as it doesn't impact the insurance premiums too much.

May I suggest that no hand propping as we have lost 3 planes on our field over the years due to this. As for aerobatic maybe make the rule only with instructor and limited maneuvers as this will make much better pilots. After all this is part of the plane’s purpose.

That’s what we’ve done. Only basic rolls and spins, with one of our instructors. And no one has taken us up on it because we don’t have chutes.

I think the aerobatic aspect is indeed difficult. Not just the liability - but the wear / tear: would members be honest enough to inform the club they exceeded vne or max g's when they goofed a maneuver, so that the plane can be properly inspected? Even instruction is an issue, since members may feel emboldened to do it on their own regardless.
