would anyone happen to know or want to take a guess, what gauge zipper would a headliner use? i am going to sew a new zipper into my headliner and would like to order it before i get back home.

is there any reason why i can't do it myself as a pilot and enter it into the airframe log?

thanks!

zipper info I just found :)

There may be a reason why not to enter it in the logbook, but certainly no reason to not just replace it. The feds are quite specific about who can write what in a logbook. There is a list in part 43 somewhere.

I think the only requirement for interiors is flammability. I would get a "non-separating" zipper -

thanks for the reply Bob, I figured once it's sewn in it won't be able to separate and I was going to put a few stitches near the end flaps to ensure it definitely can't separate. Sound good?

AC 43.13 mentions interiors but, like Bob said, it only mentions flammability. The zipper I bought is polyester fabric with plastic teeth, both are probably disqualifying which is probably why the headliner had a cotton fabric material and metal zipper teeth. The cotton is why it fell apart.

So maybe I'll have to call Airtex tomorrow to see if they have any guidance to offer about what an acceptable zipper looks like and I'll just go from there.

Thanks for the replies, I'll post after I've spoken with Airtex, they're nice enough to speak with, they should be helpful. I hate to bug my IA friend with little pita stuff like this.

If he is worth his salt he will not care what kind of zipper you use or whether it has burn certs. Don't get lost in the trees - the forest is beautiful. Probably your floor varnish is more of a flammability problem - only time a zipper catches on fire is in a lightning strike on a prom queen.
