Just joined. My name is Brian Schiff. I have a 2007 American Champion Citabria 76CAA. It has a 180hp Vantage engine. Based at KCMA in Southern California.

I learned to fly in a 1976 Citabria 7GCAA back in the 80's. Fun to get back in one!

Looking forward to participating in this forum!

That must be a fire breather. You any relation to Barry?
I have the 180 in my Decathlon - I think I like the 160 better.

HI Bob. Yes, I'm Barry's ghost-writer. Just kidding. I'm his son. Yeah, the Citabria w/ 180hp has a lot of get-up-and-go. Problem is it cruises too fast for the designed trim system. Trim creeps back when flying at high IAS. So ya power back, slow down to Vno and save fuel and enjoy more flying time!

Welcome to ChampCitabriaDecathlonForums.com Brian! FYI, there's a shortcut, CCDforums.com which will redirect you here.

The 7GCAA sounds nice, pics are always appreciated so the rest of can drool and daydream when we're not able to get out and fly.

Glad you found us and welcome!

Thanks. I'll save that shortcut!

Well, your dad seems like a nice guy. He answers fan mail.
Is the 180 hp a factory installation, or an STC? Nice looking bird.

The engine is factory. I understand it's one of 7 with that engine. Wondering if anyone else on here has the Superior Vantage engine?

Welcome Brian. Nice looking plane! I occasionally fly a 160hp 7gcaa out of KMYF. A lot of fun. I have a Lycoming 180 in my Scout. No issue going too fast.

Do you think they put it on the type certificate? They would have to, right? I will check later.

Barry just addressed one of my pet peeves in the AOPA magazine. Students are now "learners." They lost me when TCAs became Class Bs.

Seriously, there is a group of Ph.Ds somewhere whose entire function in life is to change stuff that really doesn't need changing.

"you have the controls I have the controls you have the controls."

I know. it's ridiculous. And many CFIs are now calling their students "clients." I can't get on board with that. How about something of substance out of the FAA?

Don't forget that you can't say BFR anymore. Biennial must be offensive to people who can't differentiate from semiannual, so it's just called a flight review.

Obviously air safety would be greatly enhanced if we dumb it down so "everyone gets a trophy".

Brian,

Is the Vantage engine TBO really 1,000 hours? Do you know if Superior has plans to get the FAA to extend that TBO? Any thoughts on flying it over the 1,000 hours on condition under Part 91?

I am trying to figure out if I could upgrade my current O-320-A2D 1979 7GCBC to this engine, as I live in Colorado with higher density altitudes.

Thanks!

Jeff
