Greetings! Bought a 68 7ECA couple months ago and after some tune up work on the motor and a little TLC, she's up and running! Looking at getting some upgrades, G-meter, ADS-B uAvionix tail beacon, and possibly a AV-30 to start with. Any one have any luck with these?

Thanks!

Greetings and welcome @dneill079 !

My '68 7ECA has the tailbeacon, you might find yourself having to hog out the inside of the tail light mount to fit the slightly larger diameter tailbeacon socket. The AV30 has had positive reviews here and I'm planning one for my new 8KCAB panel. G-meter's never a bad idea if you are going to be doing aerobatics but +/- G's can be displayed on the AV30 although I'm not sure if it records hi and low g levels per flight. I was going to have the AV30's G reading as my G meter in the Super D but, now that I think about, it would have to record high and low G's per flight in addition to showing instantaneous readings to be useful.

Pictures! we love pictures! let's see that beautiful old girl!

Good to know, thank you! I've seen that the AV30 does have a G-meter but also concerned that it does not from what I can see online. I've found the GT-50 might be a good option for a G-meter and a good replacement for the old clock. It shows current G-loads and also records max/ min. I'll probably add that first since it's a easy install and a whole lot cheaper to start with! 20210803_185130.webp

Sorry, forgot to finish my sentence/thought on that. Should have proof read it before send... I meant to say that it does not record max/min g loading on the aircraft for each flight, just the current g loading.

Uavionix responded to a web-request I sent asking about the G-meter feature in the AV-30. You can set max and min values that will cause alerts to be displayed if they're exceeded but it doesn't record max and min levels for each flight. They mentioned that min/max values can be downloaded from the AV-20 instrument. This info puts me back in the camp with those that will have a separate analog g-meter. 😐

That checks with what I seemed to be thinking it could do. I went ahead and purchased a GT-50 from Aircraft Spruce and will hopefully have it installed in the next couple of days. I'll add pics and let you know how it goes. There's no STC required if you don't use it to replace any permanent equipment, such as the voltmeter. If you just replace the clock then a simple A&P entry is all that is required. No W&B entry either. It records max/min g loads along with current g loading. Plus a lot of useful features.

that one seems like a good option also, i'll be interested in hearing how it works out for you.

In my 78 Decathlon AFM the G meter is listed as required equipment for operation in the aerobatic category.

The snag with all of these new instruments is that if an old one is required, the new one needs to be dedicated to that function and technically isn't supposed to be multi-function. The GT-50 is certified as a clock but not a G-meter so I'm going to guess that it wouldn't satisfy the G-meter requirement for an 8KCAB. And that my friends, is how my instrument panel came to have a standard 2 1/4" analog g-meter.

How do the new factory 8KCAB's with glass panels display G's?

i would guess somewhere on the G3X display

G3X is multifunction, not stand alone. I would have a convo with the factory. I suspect there is some latitude there, as long as you have the capability in some form.

the factory has a lot more authority to make due with what they have where we have to follow their lead. as Dale likes to say, if they wanted to mount a Kohler shower head somewhere in the plane, that shower head would become approved and they'd have the authority to do it. we would be like, i wonder if this delta shower head is aircraft grade? 😁

That is why we use automotive engine gauges.
Is there some reason these big MFDs become major alterations?

The GT-50 works great! It has been a great option to keep track of flight time as well as a G-meter. I haven't had any problems with it yet and was pretty easy install.

Good to know there are options, as the analog G-meter seems to be going the way of the Dodo.
