Our fellow forumite Brian has an article in the AOPA Pilot this month.

My Cub students usually get treated to a demo turn back after engine failure. We have a minimum of 400' agl to initiate the turn. A lot depends on your airport - ours is 3000' long.

One day one of my solo students had a total engine failure at exactly 400' agl. He had a total of 20 hours pilot time. Turned around, landed, coasted off the runway, keyed the mike and said "sorry about that." Tower said "ok". Last we heard about it.

He said he just did what I showed him the week before.
