Am looking to buy a citabria and was quoted 5k for insurance, Is this about standard price? I’ve got 300 hours pic with 200 helicopter and 100 SEL with about 70 of that in PA18-135.

Doesn’t sound right, unless your hull is worth around $140 grand or so. Try Avemco? My $70,000 Decathlon is around $1200 per year. I have way more time than you, but am 82.

For the average Citabria I would just go with liability, and skip the hull. At five grand, you could buy another good one every ten years.

Hmmmmmmm,

Does not sound correct. My insurance on my 7ECA Citabria, with $49,000 hull insurance is just about $1,100. I have 1300 Hrs PIC logged (Closer to 3k with hours I never logged), and 130 Hrs Tailwheel. This price is average for what I am told, and I have Ski Flying coverage, and coverage for operating from grass fields as well.

2 years ago when I purchased my Citabria, I only had 20 Hrs tailwheel time, I had to get a "Tailwheel Endorsement" for the insurance company even though I was grandfathered from past tailwheel experience and had to still get 5 hours duel training in the Citabria with a instructor. Back then the insurance was just a little bit more, thinking $1300.

I did go thru AOPA and EAA insurance program also. This saves some $$$$$. Check around and it might be a good idea to join one of these other organizations.

One last thing is the Hull Insurance is a big part of the premium payment. Total time, Tailwheel time, Age, Claims, medical waviors, Etc all effect cost.

Good Luck.

Yeah. Any more, insurers specify minimum dual - you can have a billion hours in a 7ECA, but you will need dual in a 7GCBC.

With 7000 hours of Cub time, including ten in PA-12s, one broker refused to even consider me for a J-5 Cub.

My hangar mates and I were just talking about this. Insurance rates are on the rise. I use Avemco for my 7GCBC hull value is 78,000, 2 yrs ago when I got the policy it was 1300 dollars this yr it was almost 1600.
Total time around 29,000, I’m an ex airline pilot. I still had to have a tail wheel check out, hadn’t flown a tail wheel since college. And get a flight review. I’m 65 BTW.

Just insured mine also grandfather in on tail wheel but required to get 5 hr dual, hull $55k cost $1800 my time is over 900 multi commercial and instrument but only 20 in tail. Vs my Warrior at $100k cost $900.

That, perhaps along with $9 avgas and $10,000 annuals, may make our chosen avocation unreachable for the middle class.

I went back and read the quote again and indeed the hull coverage was the kicker, 1200 was for liability other 4k $ was hull. Since I don’t have a plane yet, am just shopping around I gave 70k$ for an estimated hull value. Am trying to get a grasp on the money pit that is aviation before jumping into it.

It also requires me 10 hrs dual and 5 hr solo.

No, there is something wrong there. Liability is under $400/year unless you are doing something “commercial.”
Or unless you are in Alaska?

Nothing commercial, just for a personal fun plane and something that would be suitable for some light traveling in. I’m in south Arkansas.

I’m curious now gonna inquire about just liability

They may be blowing you off. Some will not even quote unless you actually own an aircraft.

I have found that many (most? all?) insurers will not quote liability only. Probably not enough in the deal for them. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places.

Bob

They are of course raping us here in Alaska for coverage. If I were not still working at 66 it would not be attainable. I would complain to someone else but you are a easy target! :)

Cheers, Brian
