I got my TW training in a 1946 Champ about 30 years ago. Love 'em.
 
I also live in Minnesota and own a 7AC. I've flown a lot of different airplanes and the Champ is my favorite.

7AC question: how stiff should the aileron control be? Is stiffness related to cable tension, or is there a pair of bearings on the torque tube that get shims (like the Cub)?
