Welcome Tom! You might want to stop in wherever the closest place is and ask them who they know in the area. Someone here might know but a local shop might get you pointed in the right direction too.

What kind of shape in the plane in? Pics?

I’m going to call the local shops and see what they say!

It’s a 1965 Citabria totally restored in 2004. There’s a fuel leak in one tank that will require the fabric to be pulled back. Is there an STC for metal fuel tank covers?

Howdy from Maine,

I had a fuel leak issue in my 72 Citabria 7ECA over a year ago (Fall of 2021), in which I had to remove the left tank and repair the leak. There was a crack on the underside of the tank which was welded and then patched and reinstalled. The fabric was cut along the sides and rear and folded to the front.

We had to do "Baseball Stitching" to reattach the fabric and now over a year later, 120 plus hours later it is still fine, No leaks and fabric in good condition.

I asked around, but there is NO STC for metal fuel tank covers, and the FAA is not doing any field approvals, at least not up here in New England. Hope all works out well for you and welcome to our Forum.

yup, the factory's position on metal fuel tank covers is that they eventually come loose from aerobatics. Cubs have them but Cubs aren't acro certified. So there you go.

How bad is the leak and are you absolutely sure it's the tank and not one of the many rubber hoses or fittings?

Originally my mechanic thought it was leaking from the fuel gauge. He drained the tank and replaced a part but it’s still leaking. Can’t tell yet exactly how bad it is or where it’s coming from. He’s going to borescope it and see what he can find.

2003 tanks are notorious for leaks.

If you cannot find a fabric guy at Ferguson Field then they don’t exist.

I was just triggering on the Overhaul date. I agree -earlier tanks are ok - my 1977 tanks are doing quite well.
