Some photos courtesy of Chuck Schweiss showing how the new metal battery box is mounted and how ACA Service Bulletin 418 is complied with. In the photos, the silver device is the main battery solenoid, the black device is the starter solenoid and there is also a circuit breaker placed there.

Some of you may have the red rubber battery case that has a clear plexiglas top. As I understand it, that battery containment system isn't obsolete so if it's in good condition you can keep using it. There may be an issue with the lightweight batteries in the rubber battery holder but you'd have to ask the factory folks to be sure about compatibility. What kind of circuit breaker? Healthy enough to start the engine, yet protect from a dead short or hung starter solenoid?

as I understand it, the CB is part of the electrical system mods outlined in the service bulletin 418

Actually, the 70 amp cb protects nothing except the wire 352 and 353 from the buss to the battery. Basically useless.
The 60 amp breaker in the alternator to buss bar circuit protects alternator output to the buss. Ok.
The 5 amp cb in the alternator/regulator circuit protects the field/ alternator from short and overvoltage issues. Ok.
Using schematic 1 just put a 5 amp cb in line 17 (alt field circuit) and an 60 amp cb in line 112 and call it a day...

Reason I asked - most of my airplanes have battery to starter through a starter relay. I think that is the way every single automotive starter in the world is hooked up, and the way Super Cubs were delivered.

Starter solenoid failures are rare - especially the kind where the contacts fail in the closed position. Still, it would be nice to have protection..

In the sb418 "improved" schematic the switched side of the master relay is connected to the input side of the starter relay with a copper bar 11-0903. In Chuck's pics it looks like he used a 4 ga. jumper wire instead. The 70 amp cb protects nothing but the wire that goes from the buss to the master relay to charge the battery.
And mounting circuit breakers to tubes with adel clamps?
Just wow...

I am not 100% sure but the factory might have added a tab to the frame for that circuit breaker. an adel clamp might be a method of compliance for older frames. will check when I am back at the hangar.

Our week of rest and relaxation in Seattle this past week was downgraded to another visit with family in Chicago. All in all a nice time which I finished up yesterday with a quick drive up to Wisconsin to pick up some parts I had on order. It's impossible to be there and not pay Dale and Pat a visit so I was able to ask a lot of questions while also sneaking in a few photos on the shop floor.

More battery tray photos, woot woot!
