New (single pipe) vs. old (twin pipe) cowling

Is there any performance advantage to the new style cowlings / single exhaust pipe vs. the old twin pipes? There's of course the benefit of being able to access the engine compartment much better with the old cowlings - but based on looks, I would image the new cowling cleans up the airflow much better. Anyway with experience converting from old to new?
