Would anyone happen to want to guess what an overhaul might cost for an O-235-C1 that is in good running condition?

Which parts are available, which aren't?

Not my airplane, FYI! lol

Thanks!

Way too much, and will take 8 months. If it is in good running condition keep running it.

Opinion.

That’s a trick question ,if you want a zero time log book start your loan process now. Better yet upgrade to an o320. If your sending it to an overhaul shop that will be maybe 15 to 20 k less. If it’s a field overhaul well!!! Being an A&P I’d say parts alone if they are available will be in the 10 k area if you replace with new crank add maybe $7,000 more. If there is no problem keep running it many motors go well beyond suggested overhaul.
Wish you the best with the decision I have 2 motors I know of that there are no parts for and have been waiting over a year one was sent to a overhaul shop and the other is a field overhaul.

The engine shop that I used earlier this year quoted base prices of $9000 for an IRAN and $24,000 for overhaul, all predicated on parts being available which they might not be.

I'd appreciate your opinions on this.

The plane is a 60's vintage 7ECA that didn't fly much from about 2001 to 2006 and then sat from 2006 to 2021 (15 yrs!). They pulled the plane out of the hangar, annualed it and began flying it again. So far it's got about 25 hours on it.

The engine is an O-235-C1 with 500 SMOH, it was overhauled in 1993. It was not pickled prior to it sitting for 15 yrs.

I'm curious to hear all y'alls' opinions on what you think the state of the engine is and what you'd do to it if you were buying the plane. Or would you buy the plane???

Thanks!
Bart

Hmmmmm I would think corrosion.. Where was it sitting??? Was it in a climate controlled hangar?? All these ?? are things you've already thought about BTW....

First thing I would do is an oil analyses. They are pretty cheep. There is blackstone and I forget the other company.

It was in a t-hangar in NJ inland from the coast. i don't know if the hangar has a concrete or dirt floor but it isn't heated or anything like that

The oil analysis might be an interesting read but I would have preferred they not run the engine at all. If it was still sitting in the hangar with the wings off I'd be more interested than I am now after it's already been run. I already low balled the guy and he isn't going for it but I bet the price will come down as it keeps sitting. But the engine...... it could be beyond saving at this point. Dead engine running.

It's orange and red with the scallops scheme.

Anyone?

Well, you saw the pictures of my cam after sitting for 5 years. Everyone had all kinds of hopeful theories that it would be fine because of various reasons. But the authoritative sources said to expect normal operations for 100 to 200 hours followed by rapid deterioration, and that is just what I got.

IMO this one would be the same, unless it was stored in Arizona.

Right, and that's why I'm so frickin' scared to go near it!

Was thinking maybe I'm overreacting so I asked for opinions. If the market continues to soften, maybe we'll call the guy back and see if he's ready to make a deal. If not, someone else can deal with it I guess.

Look for a used motor, then subtract that from value of the aircraft and make the offer. As the buyer I look at what it will take worst case to bring back to life to decide the value to me and the time to get it ready to fly. Now my thing is I am an A&P and have another aircraft to fly so time is on my side. If you want a bird ready with no problems spend the extra money and enjoy it. Time has more value than money unless you have no money.
Best wishes on your choice remember there are four four forces that keep planes flying

It's not a bad deal if the price factors in the work needed. It will need a new camshaft and tappets, and probably some gears. But the crank and case should be fine. So get an overhaul and you will have an engine with known condition and history.
