Hi everyone,
I’m new to the forum and have a few questions.
I recently bought a 1965 7ECA was thinking about installing the vortex generator STC. Anyone have any thoughts about that? Does it work as advertised?
Can you fly with the door removed?
What’s the name of the company where you can get the non STC shoulder harness (no drill, no weld) kit?

Thanks for any input,
Jim

Hooker has seatbelts that don’t require welding I just installed a set. I think there is an stc for flying with door removed but someone els can chime in on that put some pictures of your bird. And welcome

Skip the VGs. Opinion.

I routinely fly Super Cubs with both types and without. No real difference, as far as I can tell.

Fill out the form, send the moola install the plaque above the door and have fun!
The VG's don't do that much on an airframe that is already capable of such slow flight but WILL make the airplane virtually spin-proof...it just won't unload...
Where's the fun in that? 😎

Chris

Wag Aero makes a great STC'ed kit for a no-weld front and rear harness install in the Champ.
Look in the Restoration section of this forum for my pics of the parts and install. 7AC restoration and covering. Post #10 has pics of the harness install.
For something non-STC there is an FAA Policy Statement (ACE -00-23-561-01J) explaining how installing shoulder harnesses in airframes not so equipped from the factory and having an IA sign it off is accomplished.
Hope this helps.

Wag is known for using AN-6 bolts in their Cub STC harness. Better to think this through when hooking to .035 wall tubing, and save a pound or so.

We have Super Cubs with Micro and BLR VGs - both will enter a spin with normal entry techniques. I have never flown a Champ with VGs, so am ignorant of what happens with the Aeronca wing.

Pre-1978 aircraft (from memory; too early to get off the couch) may have shoulder harnesses attached using good practices and using "approved" webbing (SAE is fine, do not need FAA approval) and signed by an A&P.

That made sense - for decades i flew with illegal Air Force harnesses in my Cub. Then one day they became legal with the stroke of a pen. I did an analysis of the AN-3 bolt, and found it strong enough that the airframe would buckle before failure. Bracket was .050 4130 steel in a U shape.

Thanks guys for the input! Very helpful. Looking forward upgrading my CITABRIA and I’m sure that I will have more questions.

Jim

Welcome to the forum Jim. The door removal STC from the National Aeronca Association applies to CITABRIAs as well.

Anyone have any thoughts about remote mounted oil filter STC? I‘m in the middle of a annual so the planes torn apart. Seems like a good time. I have the O-235 C2C.
Thanks for the input.

From the best Citibrthon site on the interweb...
