I have made the decision to move forward with an overhaul of the 2,150 hr 0-320 in my 79 7-GCBC project. My mechanic advised he has done many experimental upgrades, but advised for a certified upgrade, I'd need to buy the STC. Could someone explain the process and if there is a known STC for a 0320 A2B updgrade from 150 to 160 HP for a 7GCBC? My thanks Also, if anyone has done this upgrade or knows someone who has, is it worth doing and any issues to consider other than no car gas?

Not a Lycoming expert. Continental has an FAA approved service bulletin allowing engine conversions. Some IAs would still need an STC or field approval.
There is also some deal with narrow deck vs. wide deck.
For my money, the 160 might be the best engine out there. I would trade my 180 even if the Dec had the 160 on the type cert. You might do a little type cert research, since only some of the Champ/ACA aircraft have this option.

rick,

I am not an expert on this but you should ask your IA if the STC changes the basic model designation of the engine. if it doesn't, then the engine should remain suitable for the airframe, right? ;)
