uAvionix AV-20-S Multi-Function 12 in 1, G-Meter, etc, etc

$900 is only $25 more than I paid for my Dynon D3.
The AV-30 is the one most people are waiting on to get certified, but if I were replacing a clock or my G meter this would float back to the top of the list.
AoA even! Don't get that with a Dynon.

Wonder where it gets OAT from? My plane has the low temperature meat thermometer poking through the windshield.

i think there's an AOA sensor that is sold separately

edit::: that should read an OAT sensor that is sold separately doh!

One of those details that's isn't super clear. What it does not have is an air data probe. The web site says they get AoA by calculating flight vector and accelerometer data. At first I thought that might be one of those methods which reduced the potential usefulness of AoA to that of a cool gimmick that works unless you really need AoA.

Reading through however it may actually be better than air data probe derived AoA because it will trigger during a down draft (where the proper reaction is still pitch and power).

from the product page:

"The AV-20-S alerts you visually and aurally if you approach a dangerous AoA. AoA is calculated by comparing the aircraft’s pitch, flight path, and G-loading."

from the installation manual, https://uavionix.com/downloads/av-20s/AV-20S-Installation-Guide.pdf
Outside Air Temp Input
The outside air temperature interface requires an external analog probe. This port connection is compatible with the Davtron probe analog probe P/N C307PS (not supplied). This is a simple two-wire current source based on the Analog Devices AD590KH component.
The sensor reading may be trimmed in the setup pages.

I'd just like to add, holy smokes! that's a tiny little instrument with frickin' 12 functions!

Yeah, and whilst figuring them all out, be sure to look out the window once in a while.

Has anyone installed an Av20s in their Citabria. I’ve ordered one but have not installed yet. Lee

There's a fairly large aviation trade show in my area later this month and I just got my tax return.
Last year I scoped out the Dynon D3 but didn't buy one because the graphics on the display unit weren't great. Turns it they're much better in real life and I bought one shortly after the show.

This year I want to look at engine monitors even though I have what I think is good now (digital oil temp/pressure, 4 cylinder CHT/EGT, amps and volts), they are spread across the bottom row of my panel. If I could get them in one unit I could possibly go with a low panel.

Anyway, I'm hoping to see the Av-20 and Av-30

Acro drives the average gyro nuts. Really hard on the bearings.

Mine are all vacuum, driven by an 11" venturi. I have a little shutoff valve, and use it to make sure the gyros are not spinning when I roll inverted. Seventeen years on those gyros and so far no failures. I think overhaul costs are now around $500/unit. Digital is the only viable choice for aero and coninuous use.

I can tell you that my Dynon starts throwing up bank angle alerts past 60 degrees, with arrows to get you out of the unusual attitude. No ill effects on the unit and it does not "tumble"

I installed an AV20S last week and test flew it today. It’s a great product and an easy install. The AI tracked my vacuum AI perfectly. The G meter is nice, and since I installed an OAT gauge the unit provides TAS. The AOA works but I’ll need more experience with it. I’m not sure AOA adds much value though. I would attach a photo but can’t figure how. Lee

Talked to the guys today at an aviation expo in Washington about the AV-30. Should be certified by the April timeframe. They both seem like great units. @Laytonl you mention it is an easy install. What all did you have to wire for the wire bundle? Interested to see pictures of the install and final product.

I made two laps and never saw the AV units. What booth were they in?
