Use VOR fin antenna for VHF transmitter??

My 7ECA VHF antenna is mounted on the thin wing gap filler. It is not very secure and I suspect that it make a lousy base for VH F, which ideally, should be about an antenna length in each direction. With VOR going the way of the buggie whip, I wonder if we can use the VOR antenna for the VHF. Has anyone done this. Does it make a good VHF antenna.

Comm is vertically polarized; nav is horizontally polarized. A 1/4 wave stub on the wing root fairing usually works well, because it uses fuselage tubes and wing ribs for a ground plane.

I have a buddy who found a speciial comm antenna that doesn't need a ground plane. He uses a hand held in a J3, and you can hear him from across the county. I will ask . . .
 
I still have the factory VOR antenna, and live in fear of getting an eye poked out. There has to be a better way . . .
 
the project I bought had one in the pile and I tossed it as we were loading the truck. my VHF antenna is mounted in the aluminum root fairing and it seems to work well enough, FWIW. I don't know if I have "cross county" range but there haven't been any complaints! lol

was just reading that post again, i wonder if the antennae are oriented that way because the transmitters are at 90 degrees to each other by design to minimize interference since they're not far from each other in frequency.


the video is specific to FPV antennae used on RC aircraft but I'm pretty sure that the antenna functionality is the same as our VHF/VOR systems
