Howdy,

I put a Garmin 430w and GDL 82 in my 7EC champ for instrument training. Was wondering where people are mounting their WAAS antennas. I am having issues with mine. Unsure if it's a ground plane, interference or coax cable issues.

Mine is on the wing root fairing just forward of the main spar.

Newer aircraft have a second ground plane on the top of the aircraft just aft of the greenhouse.

No ground plane required for GPS reception.
With the GDL 82 make sure you have at least 8' of coax (assuming one Connector at each end) for proper load.
Coax needs to be RG400/C17 or better.
Don't run coax past any big power cables.
Don't forget the 430W needs 4 wires to work properly; RS232 in/out, common ground (bleed lead) and the Time Mark connection.
Your 430w also needs to have the proper software upgrade to play nice with the GDL82.

Chris

So my whole set up is using an approach fast stack for the wiring harness so I 99% sure everything is wired properly. I might need to just get another coax cable made. Initially it was too short and then now I added another cable to it to get the closer to the right load. How long does it normally take for the 430w to acquire satellites?

I've had the -430/530w aquire 3d fix in less than 10 minutes...also had one that took almost 30. It takes longer the first time...after that it locks on in a minute or so.
Of course the GDL 82 will tell you when it's locked and loaded.
