New to the sight ! Looking for a Citibria Scout decathlon. Preferably 7gcbc or 8gcbc . Metal spars . Looking to teach my son with .6’4” @ 250

Decathlon is a great airplane, but a lousy primary trainer. If you have unlimited budget, a 160 hp GCAA is probably the best aircraft avalable for primary plus enjoyment if you don't count Cubs.

Good airplane. Tough to find a metal spar 115 hp. - But you should be able to get a nice wood spar for $30 grand, either GCBC or GCA. The difference in price will buy about five spar inspections.

What is your feeling on useful load. I am 180 and my son is 260 and 6’5”

Welcome to the site @Citibria, glad you found us.

In your first post you said you're looking for a Citabria Decathlon Scout, does that mean you're not sure which one you want yet? A Scout is a Citabria I suppose but a Decathlon is its own thing, not a Citabria.

It just makes it easier to help you out if you can clarify that one detail.

It doesn’t really matter. I just don’t think the old 115hp will do the trick with us at 430 pounds ! I learned in the citibria so I am comfortable with them. I would rather have at least 150hp+ ! I was leaning toward the Gcbc models for flaps ! I would be good without them just looking to teach my son with ! Thanks

Useful load. A Scout 8gcbc will give you 2150 lbs gross with usually around 1375 empty weight and either 35 or 70 gallon tanks. So 430 plus 210 fuel is 640 lbs leaving 100+ lbs baggage (or more fuel if 70 gal tanks). A 7gcaa Citabria is 1650 gross with 1170 empty with 35 gal fuel leaving you with 270 lbs payload. So you will be 160 over gross with no baggage and full fuel. 1/2 fuel and you are still over gross. Same problem for old pre ACA 7gcbc-1650 gross. New 7gcbc the gross goes up to 1950 with the big engine (also at least 150 k used). New 7gcbc with 160 hp is 1800 gw. 8gcbc Scout, either ACA or Bellanca, is the only “citabria” you can get 2 people, fuel and baggage legally. Decathlon gives you 1800 gw. They will all fly over gross-just your comfort with being legal.

10 years of Ag flying! What does legal have to do with it. Just saying! So would you be looking at the Decathlon?

My Super Decathlon (180hp) is at gross with me (190), the Greek (115), and full fuel. I don't think it is what you need.

Hey Citabria, where in Mississippi are you located? All my family is from there.

I know of a 7GCBC for sale in MS right now. Currently not listed. 150HP with flaps, but has wood spars. Let me know if you're interested and I can put you in touch with the seller.

If he is still looking two years later I would guess he will still be looking in 2024.

Well shucks, I have at least a dozen cousins in Tupelo. All 4 of my grandparents are buried there, and my parents grew up there. My mom was one of the screaming girls in the crowd when Elvis played the state fair there in '56. One of my cousins was even the US Congressman for that district for a while.
