1968 Citabria 7ECA Rescue/Rebuild Thread

I've noticed some later model air frames than mine (mine is a 1968) have two evenly spaced vertical brackets supporting the low radio stack. Are these brackets required to successfully mount the low style panel?

That looks like it would only fit the old style split panel. On the more recent panels, I believe those brackets are welded to the flat bar behind the tube. On my 78 low panel, note the lower horizontal panel ledge sits on that tube, while the radios are recessed.

This is the style of panel I have to install as I was able to source one from another local pilot over the weekend.

the radios are in the same location in your tall panel, what was supporting them?

Pre 70's the radio stack is free standing as there were no vertical brackets installed from the factory on the airframes.

I'm not sure those brackets in your photo look factory. have you seen the same ones on other airframes or only on one?

As per the 1974 and subsequent IPC.

*Note: I may have just answered my own question, I found some old photos I had taken of a bone stock original 1969 7GCBC sporting the low panel. The 69 7GCBC would not have had the vertical brackets so the low radio stack should install the same in my 1968 7ECA.

do you have a similar factory drawing for the low panel that also shows the supports?
The pre 1973 IPC leaves a lot to the imagination when it comes to the drawings unfortunately. But I think I solved the puzzle in my above edited post regarding a 1969 7GCBC I had old panel photos of.

Controls painted and re-assembled using Ray Allen front grip and BSP aero rear, I may install new bushings to remove some slop in the sticks. In the last photo it shows my incorrectly drilled and offset torque tube.

Received my Rainbow formers for the fuselage today, hmm mixed feelings on quality and experience. Overall they are OK quality but not a work of art, for $500 landed in Canada I was hoping for a little more. Firstly there is quite a bit of chipping around all the drilled openings. Not the end of the world and I'll fill them with an epoxy before installing I suppose. The top coating was in my opinion applied a little haphazardly (purely cosmetic). The big kicker is no hardware kit was included as advertised. I'll be contacting Rainbow to track down the hardware. Just my 0.02 cents but it may help anyone else debating between suppliers.

I like the rear grip. What is your source?

to be honest, I was a little disappointed with the quality of my formers and stringers from Rainbow as well.

Mine came with AN3 hardware. Controls look great, what did you use to paint them?

Primed them with zinc chromate

Stripped the controls with chemical stripper, primed with zinc chromate and painted with rattle can tremclad. They were flawless but I am a very impatient painter and I guess letting them dry for a day wasn't quite enough. The paint now has a light dimplnig on the sides of the control sticks from something I set it against post photo op. Debating sanding and giving it another quick shoot.

that sounds exactly like me! i want it to come out perfect but I'm always too impatient with the paint and dry time!

My fuselage should be off to the welder first week in Oct. post repairs I want to get it stripped and painted ASAP. What is the general opinion on the following three options?

Option A: EkoPrime plus an EkoCrylic top coat (really enjoy the fact that it is non toxic)

Option B: Stits epoxy primer kit with a two part top coat

Option C: Powder coat

Frame condition is going to determine how long before the next restoration. Go with the toughest, most ornery stuff you can get. IMO that's epoxy.

I’ll jump in, first decide which process your going to use to cover the aircraft. Then make sure what ever you pick is compatible with what your going to use. Just food for thought.
