2022 proposed Sportsman sequence video

Got a camera installed and flew Sportsman today. Pretty ugly, but the camera is really helpful to see some things I would never have caught myself in the air. Plenty to work on between now and the spring Sebring contest in April.

I will say I was pleased with my Immelman and Split S. Keeping the nose high from the start of the half roll out of the Immelman to the end of the half roll into the Split S is key to coming out of the S at a reasonable airspeed. Also found that firmly setting stick forward in the inverted 45 on the Wedge keeps the airspeed manageable during the 2/4 roll.

That's a nice video. Move the camera 10 degrees down so I can see the altimeter and airspeed and you can be my cinematographer. I'm interested in how people are able to use cockpit videos for training vs. entertainment-- have you found anything specific actionable with this?

Totally off-the-wall conversation point: I very rarely use 2 hands on the stick, but only when my right arm is sore or when I can't get a movement right- like to make sure I've got full left aileron. I almost always fly with my left hand on the throttle and find that when my hand does drift to the struts it seems to throw me off, sort of competing arm movements. Do you find yourself gripping the strut with force or is it just a place to rest your hand?

Bit of both. I don't have a Hooker harnesss yet, just the OEM 5 point, so I have some slack at my hips. When pulling straight it is not an issue, but rolling from knife edge to inverted and vice-versa I get slung around sideways. So I think I apply some force to keep my torso on centerline then, but otherwise it is mostly psychological.

Hoping to buy a Hooker this spring at SnF, which should help me feel more secure in the seat when inverted.

Ah, didn’t think of that, makes sense. The full aerobatic harness with rachet absolutely makes a difference. They’re expensive, but I use a backpack chute with standard seat cushion, and no way I can get tight enough against the thick cushion to be stable without the rachet.

Uggh. Final Sportsman Sequence came out. IMO they took a very good proposed sequence and made it worse. The Split S with 2/4 roll is questionable in a Decathlon or Citabria. Definitely going to have to come off on power now.

I'm not sure why they changed the proposed. Slow roll after the immelmann too hard with a Citabria? I've no Citabria time, anyone here do that?

But easily flyable by a Super Decathlon, challenging for a first-timer because of the length if nothing else. Still a big fan of starting with Primary. Still not a fan of 11 figures without wind correction- that would have been a good reason to revise it.

I'm always curious what goes on behind the scenes with these things, like the issue about "spins are bad" that poked its head up and hopefully has disappeared. Not enough to actually get involved, mind you.

I know the guy who test flies the proposed sequences. Adam Cope. He's a solid guy with about 30 years of instructing experience in Decathlons. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I pinged him on Facebook to get his tips. Will post response if I get one.

I had no problem at all with the slow roll after the Immelman. I prefer rolls at slow speed in my older Super D, because stick forces are less. I HATE the current approach of a roll at the end, after a Hammerhead. However, I do want to find out whether downline on the HH has a length criteria. If not, then I can pull early to do the roll at optimal airspeed.

And remember maneuvering speed by definition is max speed for full and abrupt control movement of any one control, so no *full* aileron above it. And get that hooker harness! :D

No length requirement on hh downline other than judges need to see a line. Short line will keep speed down, make it aggressive pull and you’ll bleed more off. Almost judges school season, btw, check iac website.

Finally got up and tried the Immelman - 2/4 Split S combo. I will issue a qualified retraction. It's not particularly difficult to fly. However, I came off power as I hit inverted and started the pull. Even then, I was smoking fast at the bottom, and pulling just shy of 5G. So I'm not a big fan. Maybe my irritation will soften when I fly it more and get into the nuances.
