Can anyone give me some idea what this set of mags are worth? I removed them from my 7AC and replaced with Slick mags. They were working just fine when removed. Comes with plug wires and spark plugs.
Im not sure at this point. I purchased a good used engine that had the Bendix mags. When I swapped the engine I installed my Slick mags off my old engine because the guy I bought the engine from said the Bendix were good but could interfere with the radio where my Slick mags did not.Just curious why you replaced bendix with slicks?
Still thinking on it. Still not sure what they are worth and may be a good backup depending on what I learn. How much do you want for the whole set, mailed to the east coast? I could use these for a flybaby I'm trying to bring back from the dead.
Thanks for the input. Makes me second guess what Im trying to do.He replaces SF4 Scintillas with Slicks. That's sort of different.
Sure - a lot of us have replaced Slicks with S4s and impulses. Bulletproof mags.
As to the value of SF-4 mags, once you guys figure it out I have some to sell. And a pair of shielded Eisemanns.
No, go ahead and offer yours if you want. I'm not convinced that I will be selling them yet and if I do, no worries. I'm not in any hurry here.No - you are doing the right thing. Slicks are definitely less noisy. The lunchbox mags are pretty much obsolete, although with good magnets they are more than satisfactory. Some may have platinum points!
The problem with Slicks, as I understand it, is they need to be gone through every 500 hours. That may be a good idea with any mag, but the S4s are said to be bulletproof for a lot longer than that. And I believe the SF-4s go a long time as well. They have automotive bearings and seals, and probably were standard equipment on Massey Ferguson. You can bet the Case mags were standard on tractors, too.
I have a set of S4s in the shop now, for their "500 hour" inspection. They will replace the Eisemanns on the J4. I would hesitate to even guess what these older mags are worth - remember, I got severely chastised for opining on Cub values (not here, but it was a pretty good attack!). I know lots less about the value of used mags.
I will not offer any of mine until yours sell -
You're a good man Bob. Helping others who want to fly but just can't afford it is honorable. I once gave a Ivo Prop to a guy who needed one but was trying to get something cheap as he couldn't afford it. I also know of a guy who has two Cessna 150's who rents them to students for $40.00 an hour so they can afford to get their privates. There may be a secret that saves bucks - if you can get the magneto shop to "IRAN" without paperwork you may be able to save $.
I am not really a "seller.". Once in a while some kid will come in my hangar needing something - if I know he is not wealthy he will leave with parts.

I just sent a pair of S4s out for a 500 hour check. The shop came back with an estimate of roughly $1800 per mag. I can get exchange mags for half that. The shop is reputable.
Here is the way this is apparently going:
Bendix has a service manual that must be adhered to. The manual says "replace the pre-1990 core and any riveted impulse couplings."
Those two parts alone are around $700 per mag.
The tech said the old cores are bulletproof - he just has to adhere to the manual. The impulse AD applies only to 6-cylinder mags on certain engines, but the manual says replace them anyway.
Twenty years ago I got a set of mags overhauled for $35 each. Inflation has struck.
I am going to get a buddy to check these mags on his machine, and use them. I will, of course, check the ADs - there are a couple that do apply.
And there may be one AD on the coil of the Eisemanns. Ours have been done.
