8KCAB Frame mods

Just pulled the trigger on all parts. I went ahead and ordered the shoulder harness truss and fuel selector bracket. My welder can take a look at them and we can decide on the spot what to do. Price was not prohibitive on either.

Also going to get powdercoat specs and frame prep instructions from Chad.
It took a fuzz over 12 hrs. to go from a "solid no" on the harness tabs and fuel valve to "I ordered the parts for the shoulder harnesses and fuel valve mount..."

Yah but the fuel mount bracket was 8 bucks, and Chad said I could return the truss for a refund if I decided not to use it.

Lol yeah ok.

I'm 99% sure I will not do the fuel shutoff valve. But for 8 bucks I figured I might as well get the bracket so the welder can take a look and tell me how much of a PITA it would be to install after the fact.

The shoulder tab truss was $125. If the welder says it is a quick and easy job, I'll probably get it done just so I can say the belts are up to spec.

Looks like I will need to order some more parts. The lower ledges for the rear windows are beat up to the point where I doubt they will seal.

OK, got a box full of parts from ACA, frame has been blasted bare, and welder is booked for Monday.

I didn't realize what I was signing up for. 21 different parts to weld on!! Really worried whether this is a 1 day project. I suspect not.

I got a frame diagram, but it is huge and poorly printed.

I will be asking for help from this forum. Need photos of all of the following:
  • Baggage Door Frame
  • R Lower Window Channel
  • R Aft Window Channel
  • L Lower Window Channel
  • L Aft Window Channel
  • L & R Gear Leg loops
  • Vernier tab
  • Stall horn tab
  • Front shoulder harness truss
  • Front shoulder harness tab
  • Rear shoulder harness tab
  • L&R Front seat belt lugs
  • L&R Rear seat belt lugs
  • ELT antenna tab
  • L windshield mounting plate
  • R windshield mounting plate
  • L&R Windshield gussets

Thanks! If you can get a picture of the frame welds for that baggage door, that would be very helpful. The drawings are uninformative.

Anyone got pics of the rear seat belt lugs? Are they canted or vertical? Same 3/4" spacing as front lugs?

I don't think the rear seats get a second lap belt usually. thought it was a front seat only kind of thing.

All mods done after 2 days of welding. About half of the time was taken up trying to sort out fitment of the rear window channels, baggage door, and front windscreen brackets.

Great job Ed! Nice to see someone putting in the effort to make things better.

Before you powdercoat, is there a lug just ahead of the baggage door opening for the stringer to attach to now that it can't go across the opening of the baggage door?

Yes, good eye. Was welded on after pics were taken.

I happen to notice that because I forgot to do that stringer and I'm working through a punch list of details before the fabric goes on. wires for the tail strobe/nav lights, that stringer, and a few other things then it's on to fabric.

i need the crimper for that one last stringer and then it'll be in the mail.

Going to add one note here for anyone who tries this in the future.

If you replace the window channels, be sure to get the #1 fuselage formers. You will need them to position the ends of the channels.
