LED replacement for Rotating Beacon

These are pretty cool, depending on paperwork

My beacon was intermittent. Turned out to be a simple grounding problem but took awhile to troubleshoot. When it was apart, I replaced the automotive incandescent bulb with an LED. Much brighter!

Having the strobes and beacon on the same switch is a bit of a problem for taxiing at night but I haven't found enough motivation to do anything about it.

I'm ready to replace the original rotating beacon on my 79 GCBC with a non-rotating LED replacement that flashes versus a motorized rotating one. I believe I have heard there is a replacement option that fits perfectly where the old rotating model is mounted. Does anyone have a part number/name/model? Thanks
Check part numbers like SPL-400 or equivalent LED aviation beacons.

This isn’t LED but is a hell of a lot cheaper.

I’ve got one. Required a 337 but it mounts right up to the old holes. Just a paperwork exercise.

For a time Spruce sold a bulb that was $35; went in the standard nav light socket, and had two modes - Flash and steady. The flash was comparable to strobe.
But, like flashlights, the three toggles to turn it off was a giant turnoff. I need separate strobes.

Fortunately, my Decathlon Comet strobes seem fairly reliable. Looking for a modern strobe for the Cub rudder. I will find one when I get serious.

Why did you need a 337? Field approval?

Your IA wanted a 337 for that?

Previous owner installed it and their mechanic filed a 337, probably just going off the “337 required” on spruce’s website. The 337 just referenced the STC install instructions. There is a placard that gets installed to turn off the light in fog or haze.

I would argue it’s a minor alteration (especially when installed on the fuse) but I’m not an A&P. Your IA may be more willing to call it minor than the one who installed mine.

I get it. An STC requires a 337. And yes, folks somehow get STCs for minor alterations, like the Cessna windshield visors. In my opinion you could ignore the 337 for minor alterations, but nothing wrong with filing one.

The reason I asked is that we see major alterations approved by IAs all the time. An IA cannot create approved data without a fed stamp in block 3.
