Anyone have any ideas about finding two used lightweight backpack style emergency chutes in reasonable condition? Just bought a Super Decathlon and looking to be compliant for aerobatics with a passenger/student. Thensoftie website has new once’s for about $3500 each but I am thinking there must be used ones around.

Thanks.

Just be careful that you have a good rigger. I took my Security chutes to a rigger who said they were too old, unpacked one and didn't put it back together, and threatened to cut the risers. Cutting the risers is a federal violation . . .

Facebook "Skydiving Gear for sale and wanted"

Id get a emergency/pilot container but get a ram air reserve for it, should be about the same sqft as your weight.

Last thing I’d want to do would be to bail from a plane and then drift into something unfortunate or tibfib myself with a round

Be smart to take some skydive lessons at a local DZ that has a AFF program, jumping out plane is probably the worst place for “OJT” lol

Local DZ would be a good place you might be able to score a rig and find a rigger too.

There is an app called funjumper that will help you find a local DZ.

Is there a documented example of two people that bailed from a super decathlon and survived? Why did they choose to leave the plane?

Not that I know of. However, the only reasons I can think of are: structural failure or uncontrolled smoke/fire. I did just listen to a podcast where a guy successfully bailed out of a Pitts after the stick broke off in his hands. Wild story.

I recently completed 7 hours of aerobatic training in Australia where chutes aren’t used. Of the above mentioned scenarios neither are particular to aerobatics nor super decathlons. Chutes add complexity, weight, and expense. I can find no examples of them actually saving a life much less multiples in a super decathlon performing aerobatics.
