My 1973 7KCAB needs a fuel gauge repair.

I have one of those. I dip my tank before every flight - I don’t trust gauges. Well, fuel gauges.

Sorry, dunno. I've been wrestling with my fuel pressure gauge, so thought you might be asking about that.

I will say many of us consider our wing root gauges to be mostly curiosities to keep us amused while flying, but probably not a source of reliable data, especially if you have one gauge and two tanks.

Fuel tank. I have the old gauge which has a window looking into the wing root at what looks like a tumbler type float? Will this require the removal of the wing?
can you describe the problem you are having with it? it works like a see-saw, the float on one end moves the scale on the other end

the float can fail and become saturated with fuel. the pivot point can wear out i guess and the gaskets around the glass face can leak letting fuel become visible behind the glass or allowing fuel to leak out.

what's yours doing?

It appears as if the scale has rolled over / tumbled and can't right itself. Tank and glass face are not leaking, I just get a reading of zero even with a full tank. So if the float has failed how would one repair or replace it?

Sounds like there's a problem with the float, either it's fallen off or it's saturated with fuel and not floating anymore. it's just cork on the end of the metal wire, there are photos in the classifieds area where I have one for sale. you shouldn't need a replacement, just a quick rejiggering of the float so it'll float again. not sure the best way forward, might have to remove the wing, I'd call ACA and ask Dale what's involved. he's very helpful, no reason not to call him for the right answer.

Thank you, I'll call Dale as you suggest.

I’ll assume that your fuel gauge (s) are the same as my 73 gcbc . It is a fairly easy fix/replacement . Drain your tanks .
Remove the wing root fairing/trim . With a pair of Channellock’s ( waterpump plyers ) or a small pipe wrench remove the sight gauge ring fitting - the outermost fitting , and then remove the remaining sight glass and gaskets which allow you to pull the gauge out of the tank .
The most likely cause of failure , in my experience , is a gas saturated cork float .
Call Ron Piercy at Rainbow Flying Service in Moses Lake , Washington -(509)765-1606 and ask him if he has a replacement -he had one for me . If no luck with Ron , contact me for where to get a replacement/repair kit . I’ve got the info wrote down but dont have access to it right now .
I cant type . Going back to correct all the mistakes just pisses me off . It has taken me 15 min to write this .
call me if you want and I can walk you thru it . Four oh 6 -three three 1 -oh oh 58

Member Bartman has a 73 type fuel gauge for sale . view it on page 2 of the for sale ad’s . He still has it available .

I have a 1965 7ECA, the gauge gets stuck sometimes, attached is a picture of the gauge. It looks like an Aeronca style float gauge but the outside threaded piece is throwing me off. Any suggestions?

The threaded flange on the outside must be removed to repair /replace the gauge . I use a pair of Channelocks or a small pipe wrench . If yours is sticking the cork float may be saturated with gas .
Spruce sells a synthetic float rebuild kit or Ron Piercy , Rainbow Flying Service , Moses Lake WA (509) 765 -1606 usually has good used replacements .

Thank you!
Wag-aero has a simlar kit... Im wondering if that rebuild kit fits both gauge styles -> Wag-aero P/N A-139-200 gauge and the A-139-000 gauge? I want to have the right parts before i drain and replace the float. I would assume P/N A-139-000 is the one in the tank but theres no way of telling for sure until it's removed. Any insight is appreciated, thanks for your previous replies

Been without service for a few days . I looked at the wag aero parts you listed and that gauge is not the same as the gauges in my 73 gcbc . BUT if your cork float is saturated , that synthetic float and stop washer will rebuild it .
