New Guy

Mine is Duane Cole, and mounts inboard. Lots better, since you are less likely to get a headache.

Not advocating anything illegal, of course, but you do know that in 1980 most were just xeroxing STCs and putting them in aircraft records? Not fair to STC holders, so the FAA put a stop to it.

My buddy has a 1980 Super D with spades, unsure whose STC. I am sure this can be overcome, just time, money (probably more than what its worth) and persistence. The gears are turning (see billowing smoke, too)..
.

So, newbie here. I know this thread is a few months old now but I recently picked up a 74 7ECA with freshly built wood wings. I am also looking hard for a set of spades. Is it even possible to get a set onto these old birds anymore? The Factory suggested a field approval and the FSDO said "not unless I can find someone with spades on the exact same plane as mine and get a copy of their 337".. (Yeah. Ok).

That is an enlightened outlook. You have probably asked in the correct forum. Surely somebody has done this? My Decathlon spades are STC. - Duane Cole.

Texas Air Salvage seems to have a taste for disassembling Citabrias. Maybe call them and ask to be put on their double secret waiting list for spades they might remove from salvage airframes.

I haven't put mine back on since doing the spar conversion, was just put-putting around and didn't really feel like I needed them. Started learning some basic acro, tried simulating a box entry at about 120 mph and needed two hands to do the wing wag! So they're going back on! lol

I know someone with the 337 from another plane for Olin Pash spades. I had the spades and paperwork in my hands for over a year but didn't install them. As mentioned above, copying a 337 doesn't work any more. I would have had my IA install them and go for the field approval but we were missing page 2 of the instructions, which I only know about because page 2 is called out on page 1. Page 1 had enough information to install them but paperwork is paperwork and my IA doesn't use a "pencil".
Yet another reason I'm going experimental.

The ASI gets to decide. An ASI still has the authority to approve these sorts of things. His ASI has said he will sign, based on another previous approval.

I would say "take advantage of that!" Most ASIs will not accept previous approvals as enough documentation.

If you find a willing ASI, treat them with respect and buils a good personal relationship. Bring them coffee - whatever it takes!

Any chance for a copy of that 337? I finally got my hands on some Olin Pash spades.

Yeah. Hoping that wasn't a bad idea.
Quite the opposite. Those almost never come up for sale. Legally installing them will be a challenge since you won't have the STC paperwork pointing to your aircraft. Who's to say what elves in the night can accomplish though?

Sold my plane and I've sort of lost contact with the guy that had the 337. I'll see if I can look him up.

Aren’t the 337s publicly available from the FAA? All you need is an N-number?
But a 337 from another aircraft is truly worthless if the alteration is STCd.

Well fingers crossed I can get paperwork sorted out to be 100% legit. But, now that I think about it however, I’m almost positive I seen an elve running thru the hanger not long ago..

those spades might not make such a big difference at normal speeds but above about 110 they really help to be able to move the stick left/right.

The FAA guidance says do not issue field approvals for STC stuff. That said, if you get a stamp and signature in block 3 you are golden.
If you show an inspector who has an IQ above 90 a 337 that says “STC” on the back, he will know he is not allowed to issue a field approval. Just remember - half of us have IQs below 100, so you could get lucky.

I recently bought a 1970 Citabria 7GCBC Ser no 285-70. It has a wooden spar and spades fitted on the inboard side of the ailerons.
