Starter or Battery or ?

We ended up going with a Skytec starter, works like a charm!
Just as a note so you don’t wreck the new starter, follow the cranking time limits and cycles. You can overheat and burn up your starter. Don’t know how many guys I have had to replace a month old starter for that treated the lightweight starter like the old ones built like a tank.

That's good to know! Thanks

Is skytec a lightweight starter? I was under the impression it was heavier duty! I’ll definitely dig in and figure this out. Thanks.

If you prepare your engine for start and make sure it is mechanically correct, you will only have to crank for a few seconds each start.

Is there an amount of time that if it doesn’t start you should stop and wait for it to cool off?

There is, they should have come with a little black placard to put on the panel, normally somewhere close to the key so you see it. Forgot that skytec was bought out by Hartzell so now there are both lightweight(high torque) and regular starters under the name. Here’s a link to the duty cycles for All of them.

FWIW, I had a Sky-tec LW starter on the Hiperbipe for close to 200 hours on an angle valve IO 360 lycoming with close to 10:1 compression...occasionally I had to "rock" the motor before it would start to spin but the starter never overheated or showed any signs of thermal stress...

Note that this was an actual Skytec starter prior to their sale to Hartzell. I really don't know where they're made now or by who...
