If you are looking at 54L, the best thing would be to scuff the surface where you will make the repair, then use Ceconite or Stewarts fabric, Stewart's glue (similar to 3M-30N), Stewart's Eco-fill, which can be sanded wet for a nice finish and little edge showing, and coat with almost anything that would match your original paint.
What you want to avoid is heavy paint buildup, such as what happens when you shoot another catalyzed coat of Delstar on the entire wing. Take a look at the fuselage - those tapes are over some truly hideous cracks, yet when delivered the tapes were intact. The white on the fuselage is Aerothane. That whole combination sat outside for over five years.
