the thing is, I'm trying to make the airplane as light as possible and the baggage door comes back down if you throw it up in the air.

How much does the door by itself weigh? You are already carrying the frame, which I assume is heavier. Might as well get the functional benefit.

I am also interested in adding a baggage dor to my 1976 8KCAB. Is it feasible to add one without recovering the fuselage?

I don't see why not. I believe I have seen ACA post photos on Facebook of covered aircraft getting the upgrade. You would have to cut away or peel back enough fabric to weld to the frame, but the welding points are not extensive. Call Dale or Chad at the factory ... they'll know for sure.

Yes,
Mine was installed with fabric on. Not a big deal. But used Rainbow kit not the welded ACA door.

How is the Rainbow kit different from the ACA kit? I looked at the Rainbow Aviation web site but could not find a door kit. Is one of them easier to install than the other?

I don’t think you can install the ACA kit without taking a substantial amount of fabric off the frame. You have to weld attach points for the ACA door. The Rainbow door uses tube clamps to anchor the frame.

Here is a picture of the ACA frame, looking from the inside. Weld points are at the lower right corner, left edge, and top edge. However, you are cutting the fabric away to make the opening anyways, so the additional fabric to remove is not a huge amount. Once you weld the frame in, you wrap the fabric back around the edge and glue it to the inside of the frame. You would have to cut away one spot on the belly and side to weld the lower right corner in this picture to the longeron. However, it is a very small weld, so I think a few inches of fabric would be viable. Not saying it is easy, but I think you could definitely do it with the fabric on.

There is a post "Baggage Door" from 2020 with a picture of the fabric cut for the Rainbow door.

Goodyear - Your baggage door installation looks great! I'm trying to figure out how to modify the inside cabin panel to make it work best. Can you please post a picture of the inside of your?

Rainbow. It was installed to open from left to right. Hinges are on the vertical frame post opening.
