8KCAB Battery box and Odyssey?

Thanks Chris. Battery will be here tomorrow.

As far as I can tell, all I have to do is inspect per the AD, so no need for an AMOC. I will report back on Thursday after the test hop.

Would anyone with the new battery box happen to know the thickness of the aluminum and the diameter and wall thickness of the retaining tube? Just for educational purposes.

I can measure it later. It is very sturdy and rigid. The hold-down tube is about 1/2" diameter and fairly heavy gauge. The box is powder coated. Very nice kit.

I did put the Odyssey in Thursday. Started right up - and the spare transponder worked as well. I shall forego the complicated case, and continue my inspection program.

I'm guessing around .050 2024 T3 on the box and 1/2" .065 4130 on the hold down. Unfortunately (or fortunately) as far as owner produced parts go my A&P AI isn't going to be excited about parts built based on my guesses. I think he will want to see a factory drawing, but a thrifty (cheapo) guy like me can still dream about turning his scrap pile into a $500.00 box.

But I don’t think the box is required. It is apparently only required if you want terminating action on the AD, which is silly anyway, because you still have to inspect as part of a decent annual.

But I don’t think the box is required
Mine (79 8KCAB) is missing the rubber box as shown in the parts book. I would think it would need the original box or the upgraded box to be airworthy. Are there any year models that were manufactured without a battery box? I'm just going by the parts book to assume mine at one time had a box.

The AMOC posted in the beginning states that the use of a sealed battery (which the odyssey is) in an unvented battery box (which the original battery box is) as terminating action for the AD. That's how I read it anyways.... and sign it off that way

The rubber "box" is more of a bag. Mostly worthless, IMO. That said, I think I still have my old one, along with the hold down hardware, and would be willing to sell for the carefully considered price of zero dollars. Price is firm. No tire kickers. I know what I got.

i have a spare i'd sell cheap!

Considering I still have wings to cover and paint, I guess I still have time to talk myself into the upgraded Aluminum box.
