Citabria solid aluminum axles hd $350

Couple things

When a manufacturer makes a part specifically for someone else, there is an agreement to not undercut the arrangement. Pretty sure Grove makes all the landing gear parts for ACA, Legend, and Cub Crafters, and I think Husky as well. If Grove then PMA'd those parts and sold them at a huge discount, you can see that somebody might get upset.

It is difficult to get a Field Approval for a component that is already available under an STC or from the manufacturer. You actually have to be a little underhanded or have a very pliant inspector.

I have no problem getting Field Approvals for stuff that is not available from an STC holder or the manufacturer. Case in point - I hold four field approvals for the Grove 95-1 and 95-2 master brake assemblies. If ACA decided to offer them as heel brake options for Champs (not likely; there is a better solution) then my PMI would not allow me to just buy them from Grove under a field approval.

Does that help?

Bob,

That helps and pretty much confirms my suspicions. The rub is when they take a 3 party mfg part and mark it up 300%.

Thanks for the explanation.

That probably bothers manufacturers too, but that's called Capitalism. The alternative is either regulation or a less rigid FAA.

It would be one thing if the pma’d product was a superior product. But hollow aluminum axles are my last choice for strength and durability. The only Pma/stc that I’m aware of is the factory product, hence 337 and form of approval. There may be one (stc) that exists that I am unaware of. But anyone charged with this at faa in the fsdo, with authority would consider this. They are not as hard to get as folks say, talked with Faa guys that main job is in support of field approvals. as long as you have your request in line with data and preferably a example of prior installation they will work with you. Bob I would agree you cant just say stc/Pma exists by I’m gonna throw some experimental parts on cause they are available and easy. But in this case the Pma/stc is a inferior product that in fact is not stronger/safer. I’m no expert but, like I said many ways to skin this cat. i never buy the thought since they come from the factory this way makes them the best; otherwise I’d be running around with a set of aileron spades and single puck brakes. Guess my point is find what works best for your application, hopefully it’s easy logbook entry/or stc w/337. But don’t let it stop you when it’s not listed on type cert, parts manual, stc list. you just need to find the right Faa pmi or Faa der to help, plus do your homework and put together a solid 337, it may take more than 1 go to get it to stick. Anyways, my $.02 I’ve beaten this horse to death
