8GCBC Wheels/Brakes

Goodyear,

I would tend to agree - Goodyear 8:50 x 6 or 26" for grass and light duty off trail.

This article is well researched and written. A great article on going into the Back Country with the different tire options.

In taking to the Rep in AK it seems Desser 8:50 x 6 Smooth Tundra Tire (smooth, no tread) seems to be the interim solution and bypassing the Goodyear 26" all together. If landing on grass most of the time. You can run them on less air and are light compared to the tradition 8:50 x 6.

Going from there in his opinion, the natural progression is to the BushWheel. Yes, he sells the product but very helpful and candid in his remarks. They sell all makes of tires.

Not an axle expert. Had no idea there were aluminum axles - those look like they are for experimental aircraft.

Grove supplies a lot of stuff to ACA, and as I understand it, to get a standard part for a certificated aircraft you have to buy it through ACA.

But if ACA does not use a Grove part, then your route is PMA, STC, or field approval.

Don't take my word for it - talk to ACA or Grove.

My next question is why, if you are looking at very rough off-airport work, would you consider an aluminum axle?

In talking to Alaskan BW there is aluminum axles. Apparently stronger and used on the Scout - Denalli.

Since ACA started building the Scouts the axles have been aluminum according to the Parts Dept.

When you start out from the gear leg -
1. Spacer/Shim
2. Axle
3. Torque plate.
4. Thru bolts.
5. Wheel and Tire Assembly.
6. Washer.
7. Nut.

Is that sequence about right?

Thank you...

Bob,

My understanding is that the Scout Axles - 1 1/2" have always been Aluminum from day one. The mount is Type II.

I'll ask again but I don't think ABI makes the 1 1/2" Aluminum Axles to go with their wheel and brake kit, unfortunately. I went to Grove as suggested and they don't have an STC for 1 1/2" Axles for the Scout. They referred me to ACA. I'm not certain but I believe Grove supplies the axles, wheels and brakes for the Scout.

Interesting.
