Citabria/Decathlon Paint Schemes

sipping coffee while the dogs are still sleeping here on the US east coast, been leaning towards solid white with blue starburst and gray trim but found this factory scheme that carries the gray onto the belly to make it a three color scheme. my crazy ass alternate scheme is still in the running but it's going on an RC Citabria before it ever touches the real thing! for now I think I like the blue/white

Gorgeous. Classy. Guaranteed to have eyeballs focussed on her at the fly-in!

I think I actually started this thread. It was many moons ago. I haven’t posted recently, mostly because I was getting discouraged by the length of time my project was taking. (Acquired a 7GCBC in mid restoration) It’s still a long way from completion, but we reached a milestone this week. I promised to post some pics as things progressed. I don’t (yet) have the time to spend doing everything myself, so I’m hiring the pros. It’s at the painting stage. I had asked here for ideas on a scheme, thinking I’d like to do something unique. Well, after many discussions with the paint pro, I settled on something pretty traditional, with a touch of our own. I’ll attach a few “progress” shots….A69831B0-02EE-4DD7-A672-54515D1F21D4.webp2000571D-6251-453D-A7D6-B4DD74B915FF.webp5FDBB34C-8D1E-4D5B-9D24-CFA54F22E558.webp

Those ⬆ are obviously pics of the prep stage. Here are some some where it gets a bit more exciting….some gloss is starting to show🙂9FFC0BEC-E92C-4565-891A-BC85B8950DF9.jpeg4CE7E5BD-D532-40D5-BFE8-41F0FB445904.jpeg

@Canuck 7GCBC nice to hear from you and great to see your project is making progress again! that glossy paint has got to have you excited!

we'll be looking forward to seeing the finished product. :)

The fuselage painting is finished. Headed across the apron to the avionics shop at CYAV for a new panel. I’ve been perusing the panel threads. Wow-lots of ideas! To each his own I guess, and I’d say do it according to the kind of flying you intend to do. Mine will be simple but functional for day/night VFR. Here is the finished fuse…..915B86CD-7486-43D9-96E5-7291602321F5.webp4042A1BD-F248-47CF-A26B-F4C61CF3D5B3.webp827C6053-380C-4694-B377-CD855C745C36.webp

Wow, that really looks nice!
I haven't actually seen in it person since the new paint. It's 200 miles away. I'm told the pictures don't do it justice, so I'm looking forward to seeing it in real life. Maybe this week. Is that your airplane in your avatar space? What is it?
Mine is a '67 GCBC which I bought after it had a little mishap and was in middle of its rehab.. Engine just majored and upgraded to 160hp. Metal wings installed just prior to the mishap, but they are good. Looking forward to seeing the ground from the airplane, instead of the airplane from the ground!

Yes, it is a 1999 7GCAA. After accumulating around 24,000 flight hours, at age 63, I recently got my tailwheel endorsement and recently became the proud owner of my first tailwheel aircraft. I'm having a ball learning to fly it! I can only imagine how anxious you are to get yours flying.

Haha! You bet I am. You have about 23,500 hours more to an I do! And I have 3 years on you! So have a lot of ✈️ catching up to do!! I got my PPL in 1978, flew only a bit until kids, farming, and other things kept me grounded. Once I took it up again few years ago I realized how much I missed it. (Currently flying PA28R-180) Hope to add many more hours in the next few years in a few different planes.

Hello Canuck, that paint is looking really good, I recognize the hangar it’s at, Jerry does really good work. I also have a hangar at CYAV that I’m rebuilding a 1970 7GCBC in, working on the wings with Milman spars presently, If your in the area your more than welcome to stop in and say hello.

I came across this thread and thought I would share a few designs I came up with for an art project. Ignore the shadowing, The orientation in the art project would have had some of these designs at various aerobatic angles.Black Blue Green White.webpWhite Red Black.webpWhite Purple.webp

Always thought the traditional factory schemes looks the best, especially if you slightly change the colors

I worry about getting T-boned by someone with two iPads blocking his view, or crashing in the bush and not being found. Might paint my 7GCBC red or dayglo green, like a flagman’s vest.IMG_1876.webp

Agree. We bought a dark green and grey Pietenpol, and the first thing I did was spray it yellow and orange.

There is a grey C-140 on the airport - it simply disappears when below the horizon.
