A paint booth should give you consist results for sure. I sprayed the wings together and the fuselage a separate time. Colors match perfectly and it was a pretty big difference in temperature.

Envelopes are great when they fit right and are done correctly. I used an envelope for the fuselage just so I didn’t have to do the seam myself. The blanket method is just so easy and it doesn’t have an extra piece of tape every 72 inches. But when done correctly you don’t even notice it.

When you guys painted did any one pain the wings then a month later paint the rest? And if you did did the color match?

Buy all the paint you need at one time (same batch) and stir well. Remember that the base color underneath may have an affect on the finish color.

Good news than I am leaning on the blanket for wings and controls and envelope for fuselage because it should easier.

Saterdays progress, the last picture is up for conversation. You will see some mouse leftovers But the last photo is 80 inches from wing root, the question is how bad could it be, initial inspection other than the chewing of the mice it looks good. Is it airworthy? The real work starts now with cleaning the glue, and then decision time on the spar. Looking forward to comments.

Looks ok to me, but I think this sort of thing is addressed somewhere. Start with 43-13, and then head for Bellanca maintenance manuals. But asking here is also a great idea - you ought to be able to get 3-4 really good comments.

Yep been reading 43.13 nothing clear other than need to reseal the wood, fairly sure it's serviceable but sharing as I learn also my IA has a great deal of wood spar experiance so I'll get his advice sometime this next week. No cracks any where but several nails are lose some completely out.

Your IA will make the final determination. He will be able to throughly inspect the area. Pictures don't necessarily reveal everything.

I don’t want to be the guy that helps determine airworthy or unairworthy, BUT I had the exact same chew marks and I kept saying “glad I’m changing the spars out.”

Those wings look very clean!

It's just the edge. I doubt it affects the strength at all. If the total height of the spar were impacted, then maybe. If they were mine I would sand and varnish. Somewhere there is a discussion of edge deterioration and how much is allowable. You should ask the J-3 guys.

Great comments how do I get with the j-3 guys? If you rember where you found the discussion on edge deterioration please let me know. I will look on my end and I appreciate the sharing of information. After all is said and done the final call will be my IA.

Back from sun and fun very different experiance from airventure, spent most of our 2 days with the folks from Stwarts and what a bunch of nice guys. Went to poly fiber tent first and let the wife smell the fumes and as we are walking away was informed not in my house Next day se sat in the fabrics class Stwarts put on and I did the paint class, which was a long day but now I am allowed to work in basement Going to place my order and request it to be delivered next month as I am still working on glue removal. Found lacquer thinner works well without the terrible smell. About 90% done with wings then will clean up the controll surfaces which will go quick compared to wings. If anyone is thinking of painting there fabric ask them for some painted material it's amazing how flexible it is. Next up is building a roterciery for wings.

Stewarts has a lot going for it, but so far I have not personally seen a glossy finish. My buddy is struggling - he bought the recommended equipment and follows directions - but nope. I have asked for a field approval to put butyrate dope on top of the white Ekofill, but so far no response.

Mid- April my buddy is flying up to Santa Maria to get some expert one-on-one instruction. So far his finishes are sort of orange peel and uneven.

They need to get some options for the top coat on their STC.

They explaine this and we were shooting paint at the show and this came up if I can do them some justice the orange Peale is from each putting to much material on at each pass, but let them instruct. We had a nice shine from shooting the paint on paper sheets I think it was about the forth fog coat that we started to become glossy this took about an hour and half at 70 degrees in a paint booth and they explaine temputure is critical never shoot below 55 If my memory is any good then the humidity plays a part in how quick you can do each coat. Let me know how that turns out, I hope to start shooting in 60 to 90 days depending on what life throws my way.
