Went Flying 2023 ---- pictures thread :) ----

Saguaro Safari ... in search of the not-so-elusive Carnegiea gigantea. Also thrown in for good measure -- some non-Chinese-espionage balloons, and a glimpse of Arizona history from 150 years ago.

The 2023 Arizona Balloon Classic at the Goodyear Ballpark (spring training home of the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Whatevers) was just starting as I took off from the adjacent Phoenix-Goodyear Airport.

From 1865 to 1905, Culling's Well was a major stop on the road from the Colorado River to the huge Vulture gold mine near present-day Wickenburg, and to the territorial capital at Prescott. It was known as "The Lighthouse in The Desert." All that is left now is a big hole in the ground where the well collapsed, some foundation stones and the concrete trough where travelers' animals were watered (for a fee). This is a long read, but a fascinating insight into life and travel in the Arizona desert 150 years ago: https://www.apcrp.org/CULLINGS_WELL/Lighthouse_In_The_Desert.htm

Charles Culling and others are buried in this tiny cemetery not far from the well:

I enjoyed my flight a couple of weeks ago over the Salt River canyon to Grapevine (88AZ) so much, that I brought Mrs. P along this time. On the way there we flew a more southerly route past the Superstition Mountains and the huge copper mine at Globe AZ, and landed at the San Carlos Apache Airport (P13). The Apache Gold Casino is right across the highway, so we had breakfast and dropped $20 in a slot machine before heading on to Grapevine.

that is an AMAZING area for that kind of flying! wowsa

edit; wikipedia says he dug it by hand. how do you dig a well in the sand by hand???

Howdy All,

Got the Skis finally placed on my 7ECA "N11667" and the Annual Inspection completed. Made it to a local Ski-Plane Fly-In a few weeks ago and all worked out great. The snowmobile club groomed the grass runway in a friends back yard. Russell Field 56ME

I arrived on time, and made the best landing on skis that anyone could of made. (Not bragging, but I was lucky)! They even got it on video, hugging the trees and dropping down and kissing the ground. No bounce or rocking. I even impressed myself.

So, I learned a lot that day. When I taxied back to park and had some folks help push me back in line to park, and one fella wanted to know if that was my 1000 landing, which I replied, "That was my first landing on Ski's ever", and he could not believe that.

I did 3 more landings that day, all were nice, and I learned several things that day.

First off, sometimes folks will see me do a nice landing even if that is out of my norm. (Some of my landings are pretty poor!)
Secondly, My 7ECA is under powered to taxi and take off even on hard packed snow. Got stuck when I stopped.
Third, I need a Tail Ski as the Citabria's are very tail heavy for Ski flying.
Fourth, I need plastic bottoms on my skis so they slide easier.
Fifth, I need to modify my ski dollies further.
Lastly, IT IS A BLAST TO SKI FLY !!!!!!

I hope this video works of my landing. Please feel free to comment either way.

We've had a lot of rain in Arizona lately. The Gila River is normally dry, but it has quite a bit of water flowing through it now. A couple of mornings ago my 7ECA and I followed the river from GYR as far as the Painted Rock Dam. The desert was full of color.

It's a beautiful New Year's Day here in North Texas. Just a few miles north of my home airport (KXBP) is a huge conglomeration of limestone quarries. This is where the rock originated for the concrete mix that made up DFW Airport and most of the Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex. The body of water is Lake Bridgeport.View attachment 6205View attachment 6207

I landed at KXBP on last Saturday- ahead of the storms. Wind blowing like stink! Got gas and flew to 58T for the night
