Went Flying 2023 ---- pictures thread :) ----

I did happen to go flying yesterday! Brought 7DW back home from Wisconsin after ACA finished up the paint and final assembly of my '77 8KCAB Super D.

The guys at American Champion that do the assembly/restoration work and, of course, Chad on the right, who is the voice on the other end of the line when we need parts!

if you ever cross the bay to Delaware let me know, would love to see it

Fist solo flight in tail wheel is about 30 years, searching for some guidance I noticed at 2500 rpm the ball is a little left, if you add ruder then to maintain level I have to add right aileron, but if I just use slight pressure with right aileron the ball centers and wings stay level. Suggestions, I’m thinking of I might need to add some wash in the wing?

Maybe.
Try this - get it all trimmed up and take your hand off the stick. Can you hold it wings level with the rudder?

If so, does the nose keep going straight? If so, then note the ball position - whatever it says is coordinated level flight.

If not . . .

First thing is to look at your ailerons - are they faired with the wing, or drooped the same amount both sides? If not, something is wrong with your ailerons. If they are faired then it is time to look at differential wash.

What I think is I need to wash the wing, if I go to level flight with ball centered requires right aileron if wings level and use rudder to center ball then I need more right aileron to hold wings level. Checks rigging on ailerons 3 times thanks for the help. So I’ll make small adjustments till I’m happy.

Make sure the fuel tanks are in balance. An ever so slight imbalance of the parking surface can affect said fuel balance.

Rigging does not affect aileron trail or roll. You can adjust cables all day long and not affect hands-off roll. What I am suggesting is to do a quick test flight to eliminate the possibilities tat your ball unstrument is improperly mounted or your ailerons mis-matched.

A "Smart Level" check on the ground is also a good idea.

I understand what you are suggesting my fist flight the control stick was maybe 2 inches to the right is level flight, and the ball was left. I re rigged the ailerons and cross checked them, now in level flight by wing position on horizon it still required ever so light right aileron which makes ailerons flush with wing on both sides. with no rudder and ball was left, indicating to me a heavy left wing. if you let go it slowly turns left. Interesting enough in takeoff and climb with full power (all a 235 has) you can let go of the stick and rudder and it climbs with ball centered.
Thanks for all the input PS fuel can be full and same results.

Adjusting where the stick is has nothing to do with whether it turns hands-off. Try my test, and look at the ailerons, with your hands off the stick.

Another great East TN day. Update on wing level, I shorted rear strut I think this is adding wash 2 turns, ball is almost centered. As suggested hands off the plane still turns left slowly, until about an hour into flight then more pronounced possibly from fuel burn the right tank shows 1/8 and left is almost half. Now to search out why my first hint is the vent is in the air pressurizing one tank. Open for suggestions. Have a great day it’s football time!

Were the ailerons equally faired or drooped with your hands off?

It turns left even with right rudder?

So with equal droop and wings level, hands off, and the ball off center, is the aircraft going straight, or turning?

Next step is to fill both tanks and see where I’m at. Left spade has washer under aft portion which may be what is left but I’m making small adjustments one at a time. Also going to get the fuel vent deflector so it’s not pressurizing the right tank causing uneven fuel. I looked at ACA for the fuel issue.

I have an 11 gal tank in my J-3 - in just one wing. It has very little effect, full or empty. If your ailerons are equally drooped hands-off, and keep the wings level means you are turning, then sure enough it is time to look at wash.

This has been my thoughts as well I have a Warrior as well and fuel will play some but not this much, that being said this is my first time changing wing was and after as much as I have done to this plane and never having flown it before taking apart I’m very encouraged with only having a few minor things to adjust. Thanks for all the input and have a great day.
